Job summary

General Motors' AV Developer Productivity group seeks a Principal Engineer to lead observability tooling and influence the technical roadmap across the GM Autonomous org. You'll contribute code, reviews, and designs to improve performance and reliability of observability systems.

You will mentor engineers, balance business needs with engineering priorities, and evaluate new tools through PoCs, while aligning with team vision. This hybrid role may involve relocation benefits.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years defining and executing technical strategy across multiple teams.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent.
  • Experience driving consensus on multi-functional effort using influence without authority.
  • Experience designing large-scale systems.
  • Extensive experience with container orchestration (Kubernetes).
  • Proficient in distributed systems with Go, Python, Rust, C/C++, NodeJS or equivalent.
  • Experience with Unix/Linux, SSH, and networking fundamentals.
  • Strong collaboration, documentation, and feedback skills.
  • Experience mentoring engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Using your software and systems engineering skills to contribute code, perform code reviews, and create designs that improve observability system performance and reliability.
  • Proactively identify challenges and drive improvements in engineering through observability.
  • Partner with Software Engineering teams to understand use-cases and guide tool adoption.
  • Build tools to collect and act on observability signals from distributed cloud systems and on-vehicle sensors.
  • Influence the team’s technical roadmap by evaluating new tools and technologies via PoCs.
  • Drive best practices within the team and across the AV organization and create tooling to encourage them.
  • Guide the team to balance delivering impact with reducing technical debt.
  • Mentor and grow engineers on the team and across the organization.
