Job Title: Principal Engineer, Aerospace & Defense

Hiring Manager: Director, Customer Innovation Center

Mission of the position: The primary objective of this role is to design, propose, build, and qualify filtration & flow products for Space & Defense applications. Working closely with the Business Development team, this position will directly interact with customers and internal resources alike to develop proposals & manage new programs to fruition. With both conventionally manufactured and additive technologies, this critical role will help scale Mott’s Aerospace & Defense business to take advantage of growth trends seen in Space Exploration, Advanced Weapon Systems, and Novel Aircraft Programs.

Key Responsibilities:

Major Challenges:

  • Subject matter expert (SME): Be the internal SME for all Aerospace & Defense development projects and the external “face of Mott” for key customers.
  • Win new business: Manage technical opportunities from initial pursuit to close, supporting the commercial team in pre-sale calls, review of RFP packages, and customer specifications. Support proposal builds and present them to our customers.
  • New Product Program Management: Build project plans to design, build, test, and ultimately transfer to production. Strong quality process & documentation management throughout design & build cycles.
  • Proposal & program process improvement: Act as customer champion with latitude to make changes to improve speed, accuracy, cost, and depth of product proposals & developments.
  • Lengthy RFP Documents require thorough breakdown to identify critical elements of product and qualification.
  • Significant quality documentation & paperwork management to ensure compliance with all program specifications.
  • Understanding the differences in platforms and qualification processes of each major Aerospace & Defense customer.
  • Coordinating cross-functional team in matrix format to respond quickly and accurately to opportunities.
  • Understanding technical benefits and limitations of new and novel filtration and flow control products produced by Mott.
  • Managing complex next-generation customer requirements that may require outside resource engagement to succeed.
  • Managing expectations and navigation a rapidly growing business.

Expected Performance Outcomes:

Required Experience:

  • Proposal Active RFPs and Strategic Programs Won:
  • Consistently work across ~10 active RFPs
  • 10+ new programs qualified annually, critical to Mott A&D strategy
  • Deliver $5 - 10M/year worth of projects
  • Proposal Speed & Accuracy: Deliver proposals in under 2 weeks; flight qualifications in less than 24 weeks with ability to reduce by 30-50% after 6 months
  • Program Speed & Accuracy: Deliver 95%+ on time; 0 RMAs or qualification failures.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial or Material Science Engineering
  • Project Management training/certification, Master’s degree a plus.
  • Security clearance a plus.
  • 7+ years industry-specific experience managing complex Aerospace & Defense and Government proposals with cross-functional teams—knowledge of Aerospace & Defense qualification processes is a must.
