Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or technical field with 15 years related experience, or Master’s with 9 years, or PhD with 7 years (Merit preferred)
  • 3+ years of dedicated experience in the medical device industry
  • Primary designer for product lines with significant revenue/IP (multiple patents)
  • Analytical skills and advanced engineering principles for solving problems and developing new products

Responsibilities

  • Design complex mixed-signal, multi-layer PCBs (analog, high-speed digital, RF, power) using Altium or similar
  • Develop robust firmware/software for embedded microcontrollers
  • Lead cross-functional teams across software, hardware, QA, regulatory
  • Own design controls, risk management, and IEC 60601-1/60601-1-2 compliance
  • Review patents, generate IP, and create prototypes/ECNs

Summary Of Duties

Merit Medical is seeking a highly motivated Principal Electrical Engineer (or a Senior Electrical Engineer) to spearhead the design, development, and long-term sustainability of our advanced medical device portfolio.

This individual will lead the design, development, integration, verification, and lifecycle management of advanced medical device systems that combine embedded electronics, imaging technologies, sensors, software, firmware, and data acquisition capabilities. The successful candidate will work across the full product lifecycle, from early architecture and concept development through regulatory approval, launch, and post-market support.

This role requires deep expertise in both hardware and software development, strong systems engineering skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams including software, mechanical, clinical, quality, regulatory, manufacturing, and marketing. The engineer will serve as a technical leader responsible for driving innovative solutions while ensuring compliance with medical device design controls, risk management processes, and applicable international standards.

Essential Functions Performed
  • Develops and applies advanced theories and research techniques in the investigation and solution of complex and advanced technical problems on the forefront of new technologies.
  • Design complex mixed-signal, multi-layer PCBs (analog, high-speed digital, RF, and power distribution) using tools like Altium Designer or similar.
  • Conducts complete and conceptually related studies to approach technical problems, whereas the problems are difficult to define, require unconventional or novel approaches, and require sophisticated research techniques.
  • Performs technical work where available guides and precedents contain critical gaps, are only partially related to the problem, or may be largely lacking due to the novel character of the project.
  • Generally, contributes inventions, new designs, or techniques which are of material significance in the solution of specific problems.
  • As a staff technical specialist, keeps abreast of new scientific methods and developments affecting the organization for the purpose of recommending changes in emphasis of programs or new design programs warranted by such developments.
  • Plans, organizes, and supervises the work of engineers or technicians and may be assisted on various engineering projects.
  • May provide input and direction to management on various issues.
  • Works on special projects, writes ECN's, and creates prototypes.
  • Review existing patents to determine infringement status as well as generate new IP during the course of development projects.
  • Design and develop robust firmware and software for embedded microcontrollers.
  • Establish seamless communication and integration between physical hardware and code.
  • Performs other duties and tasks as required.
Summary Of Minimum Qualifications
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or technical field related to the department of assignment or industry with fifteen (15) years previous related experience, a Master's Degree with nine years previous related experience, or a Ph.D with seven years previous related experience. Merit experience highly preferred
  • 3+ years of dedicated experience specifically within the medical device industry
  • Primary designer for product lines resulting in significant revenue and intellectual property (multiple patents) for Merit.
  • Ability to independently apply analytical skills, complex scientific technical principles, and detailed knowledge in solving engineering problems and developing new products, techniques, or designs.
  • Demonstrated computer skills preferably spreadsheets, word processing, database and other applicable software programs.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to work effectively as a team member.
  • Working knowledge of United States and international standards as applicable to the department.
  • Direct experience preparing devices for IEC 60601-1(Safety) and IEC60601-1-2(EMC) testing.
