Job description

Hum was founded in 2019 to make rail transportation safer and smarter. Our products provide railroads, rail shippers, and railcar owners with the most advanced sensors for applications like predictive railcar maintenance, live railcar weights as accurate as a scale, and next-generation fleet monitoring tools.

Hum is now entering a growth phase as it seeks to meet the needs of its customers across multiple continents. We are looking for the right people to join our team as we work to create innovative products that modernize rail transportation.

What you’ll be doing
  • Skunk Works Developer – Hum has a suite of sensors that require further refinement and customer support. We also have multiple products in development, some of which are pioneering new technology. This role involves working on cutting-edge projects, integrating the latest technological innovations.
  • Best-In-Class Engineering – Hum aims to be the leading engineering firm in transportation telematics. Our goal is to deliver top-quality hardware and software that push the boundaries of what's possible, avoiding shortcuts and focusing on excellence.
What we’re looking for
  • Fundamental Thinkers – Ability to approach engineering challenges from first principles in physics and mechanics.
  • MacGyver Genes – Creativity and resourcefulness to solve complex problems without predefined answers.
  • Never Satisfied – Commitment to continuous improvement and integrating new technologies.
Responsibilities
  • Architect, design, and implement firmware for next-generation IoT sensors used in freight rail.
  • Lead development of low-power management strategies to extend device lifespan in remote, battery-powered environments.
  • Integrate and optimize wireless protocols such as LoRa and BLE for reliable, long-range, low-energy communication.
  • Design filtering solutions to improve signal quality in noisy industrial settings.
  • Define firmware architecture and system requirements in collaboration with hardware, software, and product teams.
  • Establish best practices for firmware development, including code quality, testing, and documentation.
  • Debug complex system-level issues and optimize performance across hardware and firmware interfaces.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and propose strategic advancements in IoT and sensor systems to influence the company’s technical roadmap.

Requirements include:

  • 10+ years of experience in firmware development for embedded systems, especially IoT or sensors.
  • Expertise in low-power management techniques, demonstrated through successful deployments.
  • Proficiency with LoRa and BLE protocols, including customization and performance tuning.
  • Experience with OTA updates in low-power embedded systems.
  • Knowledge of Cellular CATM-1 and NB-IOT, including Nordic nrfConnect SDK.
  • Strong RF skills, including antenna tuning and large-scale deployments.
  • Deep understanding of vibration analysis and signal processing for predictive maintenance.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ for ARM Cortex-M platforms, with RTOS experience; Zephyr is a plus.
  • Proven leadership in complex projects from concept to production.
  • Strong debugging skills with tools like oscilloscopes and JTAG.
  • Excellent communication skills for diverse stakeholders.

This position is based in Austin, TX. Candidates must be US citizens or H1B visa holders.
