Job summary

SR2, a fast-growing AI infrastructure company, is seeking a Principal MV Power Systems Engineer for onsite work in Austin, TX or other major US hubs. You will design the MV distribution network as a reusable standard, scalable by adding generation blocks and without outages during energization.

You will specify tie schemes, substation design, protection philosophy, and relay settings for inverter-dominated grids; perform load flow, short circuit, coordination studies, and EMT analyses; and drive

Qualifications

  • Hands-on ETAP or SKM modelling of MV networks.
  • PSCAD modelling of switching, energization or islanded events.
  • Protection philosophy and relay settings for limited fault current.
  • MV distribution design to hardware level incl. switchgear and transformers.
  • Experience turning designs into repeatable standard across sites.

Responsibilities

  • Design the MV network from generation blocks to data halls using a single standard.
  • Create tie and MV substation designs with transfer schemes for energizing live load.
  • Size feeders, cables and transformers; perform load flow, voltage drop and short circuit studies.
  • Define protection schemes and relay settings for inverter-dominated networks.
  • Establish standard specs for MV switchgear, transformers and cabling.
  • Capture design envelope and triggers for site-specific studies; feed lessons forward.

Job description

Principal MV Power Systems Engineer | Onsite (Austin, TX or other major US hubs) | $300K to $380K base + equity

I'm working with a fast-growing AI infrastructure company that generates its own power on site for large data center campuses, running generation, storage and compute as islanded systems without relying on utility interconnection. They're hiring a senior MV engineer to design the distribution network as a repeatable standard that is deployed on every site and scales by adding generation blocks instead of redesigning.

What you'll own
  • The MV network carrying power from each generation block to the data halls, designed as one standard used on every site
  • Tie and MV substation design: bus arrangement, transformer selection, tie and transfer schemes, and switching sequences that let new blocks energize alongside live load with no outage
  • Feeder, cable and transformer sizing, plus the studies behind it: load flow, voltage drop, short circuit, protection coordination, and EMT studies of switching, energization and islanded transients
  • Protection philosophy and relay settings for an inverter-dominated network with limited fault current
  • Standard specifications for MV switchgear, transformers, cable and relaying
  • The design envelope (block count, feeder length, fault level, load step), the triggers for site-specific studies, and feeding lessons from each energized site into the next revision
What they're looking for
  • Hands-on ETAP or SKM modelling of MV networks, with load flow, short circuit and cable sizing results that went into IFC drawings
  • PSCAD modelling of switching, energization or islanded events (transformer inrush, ferroresonance, inverter fault response) that changed a design
  • Protection philosophy and relay settings for systems with limited or variable fault current
  • MV distribution design down to the hardware: metal-clad switchgear, transformers, cable and duct bank ampacity, grounding, defended against NEC, NFPA 70E and IEEE with EORs and AHJs
  • Substation or bus tie schemes that energized new capacity next to live load, including the operator switching sequences
  • Experience turning a one-off design into a standard other engineers applied across multiple projects
Nice to have:

transmission-side study and protection work (IBR interconnection, EMT, transmission relaying), grid-forming inverters and microgrids (including remote or mining power), PE license, utility-scale PV and BESS collector design (34.5 kV), data center electrical distribution from MV through UPS.
