Job summary

EnergyHub in Burlington, VT is seeking a Principal Data Engineer to design and scale data pipelines from energy IoT devices, supporting a cleaner grid. You will lead system design, own data models, and collaborate with analytics and ML teams to deliver insights.

You will mentor engineers, drive architecture decisions, and implement reliable data ingestion using Snowflake, Airflow, and AWS services. This role offers a hands-on leadership track in a fast-growing, mission-driven energy tech company.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Experience building data pipelines and ELT/ETL systems, and leading system design/architecture.
  • Experience with data warehouses (Snowflake) and data modeling.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement data solutions that transform data from energy IoT devices into actionable insights.
  • Build scalable, reliable data pipelines and APIs to enable integration with third-party systems.
  • Mentor engineers and collaborate with analytics/ML teams to optimize data products and platforms.

Job description

As a Principal Data Engineer, you will:
  • Design and implement software solutions that turn millions of electric vehicles, smart thermostats, batteries, and other energy IoT devices into resources that help create a cleaner and more resilient grid
  • Design and implement systems for ingesting and managing data from core utility software systems, such as meter data management systems, geographic information systems, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), EMS/SCADA and others
  • Operate almost completely independently to find potential solutions, design them, identify roadblocks and challenges, and parcel out the work to senior engineers on various different teams
  • Build influence across teams and across functions to take on initiatives that impact the whole company, chart out the relevant dependencies and tradeoffs, and help teams execute on the shared roadmap you build
  • Develop new ways of connecting our systems to energy markets and the systems that balance the electric grid
  • Develop APIs and tools that enable hardware manufacturers and third-party enterprise software systems to integrate with our platform
  • Collaborate with our analytics and machine learning teams to deliver new data insights and optimize our virtual power plants
  • Improve the scale, automation, and reliability of our massive pipeline of device telemetry, energy, and weather data
  • Introduce and devise tools, techniques, and best practices that benefit the entire team
  • React to and resolve novel technical, operational, and organizational challenges
  • Contribute to our team culture and inclusive environment
  • Mentor early career engineers and more senior engineers on the teams you interact with
Key Skills and Experience:
  • 10+ years professional software development experience
  • Python and SQL (of any flavor) experience required
  • Experience building out data pipelines and ELT / ETL systemsComfortable leading system design and architecture
  • Experience with data warehouses (we use Snowflake) and data modeling
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Designing and building data pipelines within an electric utility
  • Familiar with tools and technologies like airflow, dbt, AWS kinesis, S3
  • Typical development tools and processes (automated testing, continuous integration/deployment, monitoring systems)
  • Java or MongoDB
  • Sigma, Tableau or similar BI tools

The base salary range of this opportunity is listed below and is determined within a range based on factors including qualifications, location and experience. This allows opportunity for growth and development within the role. The base salary offered is part of a total compensation package.

Base Salary Range: $180,000 – $220,000 USD
