Job summary

Westinghouse Electric Co seeks a Principal Control Systems Engineer to lead design, integration, and verification of non-safety industrial control systems for global projects. The role requires ownership of system-level outcomes and collaboration across software, hardware, and field teams.

You will report to the Control & Information System Engineering manager in a hybrid role based in Cranberry, PA, with up to 25% travel. Base salary ranges from $125,800 to $143,380 per year.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline (e.g., electrical, controls).
  • 10+ years of experience in industrial control systems engineering or related field.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership of complex control system projects.
  • Expertise with PLC/DCS/SCADA platforms and related hardware/software.
  • Depth in control system hardware design, software, or systems engineering.
  • Experience leading root-cause investigations and cross-functional coordination.
  • Experience developing and managing requirements with verification/validation in regulated environments.
  • Proficiency with P&IDs, loop diagrams, system architecture, interface specs, design calculations and test docs.

  • Coordinate cross-disciplinary execution across software, hardware, cybersecurity, quality, and field engineering.
  • Mentor engineers and promote standardization and continuous improvement.
  • Support project planning with scope, effort estimation, and risk assessment.
  • Travel up to 25% may be required.

About The Role

As a Principal Control Systems Engineer, you will provide technical leadership for the design, implementation, integration, and verification of non-safety industrial control systems for complex greenfield and brownfield projects worldwide.

This position is intended for an accomplished controls engineer with 10 or more years of relevant experience and recognized depth in control system hardware, software, or systems engineering.

Responsibilities will leverage the individual's technical strengths while requiring ownership of system-level outcomes, leadership of complex technical work, across multiple functional interfaces.

You will serve as a principal technical authority, leading the resolution of complex and high-impact issues and collaborate with software, hardware, systems, testing, cybersecurity, quality, project management, suppliers, customers, and field engineering teams. You will establish technical direction, align stakeholders, and drive reliable, secure, maintainable, and innovative control system solutions throughout the project lifecycle.

You will report to the Control & Information System Engineering manager and work a hybrid role based in Cranberry, PA.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the architecture, design, implementation, integration, and verification of complex industrial control system solutions in accordance with customer, regulatory, cybersecurity, quality, and internal requirements.
  • Interpret and decompose system-level requirements, resolve ambiguities and conflicts, and establish coherent control system requirements and design approaches across multiple functional scopes.
  • Develop and approve control strategies, control logic, cabinet designs, Human-Machine Interface (HMI) functionality, networks, power distribution, and system interfaces using standard industrial control system platforms and engineering tools.
  • Define technical architecture and integration strategies for controllers, I/O, networks, servers, power supplies, field devices, and interfaces with plant and external systems.
  • Lead the development and technical review of engineering documentation, specifications, calculations, procedures, and design standards supporting the full control system lifecycle.
  • Establish verification and validation strategies and lead type testing, factory acceptance testing, system-level testing, commissioning support, and resolution of test findings.
  • Lead complex engineering analyses, including software hazard analyses, FMEAs, susceptibility assessments, failure investigations, and power and heat-load calculations, as applicable.
  • Lead the investigation and resolution of complex, novel, or cross-disciplinary technical issues; identify root causes, evaluate risk and alternatives, and drive corrective actions to closure.
  • Serve as the technical contact and subject matter expert for major control system scopes, advising project leadership, customers, suppliers, and engineering teams on critical decisions.
  • Coordinate technical execution across software, hardware, systems, testing, cybersecurity, quality, project management, procurement, and field engineering functions to achieve integrated project outcomes.
  • Lead design reviews and technical decision-making, including evaluation of significant risks, tradeoffs, deviations, and changes that affect multiple disciplines or project goals.
  • Mentor engineers, provide technical reviews, develop engineering capability, and promote standardization, sharing of lessons learned, innovation, and continuous improvement across the controls discipline.
  • Contribute to project planning by defining technical scope, estimating effort and schedule, identifying technical risks, and supporting proposal and resource-planning activities.

We may require up to 25% travel to support customer systems and critical project milestones.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in computer, electrical, mechanical, nuclear, controls, or related engineering discipline.
  • 10 or more years of progressively responsible experience in industrial control systems engineering or a related field.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership of complex control system projects, major subsystems, or lifecycle activities from requirements and design through testing, deployment, and issue resolution.
  • Expertise with one or more PLC, DCS, SCADA, or industrial control system platforms, with broad understanding of associated hardware, software, networking, cybersecurity, and system integration considerations.
  • Recognized depth in control system hardware design, control software development, or systems engineering, together with strong working knowledge of adjacent disciplines.
  • Experience leading root-cause investigations and resolving complex, ambiguous, or high-risk technical issues involving several functional areas, suppliers, or customer organizations.
  • Experience developing and managing requirements and leading verification and validation activities in regulated, safety-conscious environments.
  • Advanced proficiency with industry-standard engineering documentation, including P&IDs, loop diagrams, system architecture diagrams, interface specifications, design calculations, and test documentation.
