Are you ready to advance your career in smart factory engineering? We are looking for a Principal Automation Engineer to join our cutting-edge operations technology team at Collins Aerospace within our Power and Controls business unit. In this role, you will work directly with production teams and modern automation technologies to transform our shop floor into a fully connected, data-driven environment. This is a central role supporting multiple sites within our company. You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams across the sites and enterprise to deliver intelligent systems, increase visibility, and enable data-driven decision-making across our operations. From deploying robotics to integrating MES/ERP platforms with real-time data pipelines, your work will drive the next generation of aerospace manufacturing.

This is an onsite role and is preferably based in Windsor Locks, CT. Other Power & Controls locations (such as Phoenix, AZ, West Des Moines, IA, or Rockford, IL) will be considered for a preferred candidate. Anticipated travel is 15-20%.

What You Will Do
  • Support deployment and troubleshooting of robotics systems (e.g., collaborative robots, CNC automation) and integrate them with broader control systems
  • Lead or contribute to machine connectivity initiatives, including network configuration, tag structuring, and data modeling to enable smart factory capabilities
  • Drive the integration of factory systems (e.g., MES, ERP) with IoT platforms and ensure real-time data visibility and communication across the production environment
  • Create and manage the budget for smart factory projects, ensuring cost-effectiveness and adherence to financial constraints
  • Develop training programs for staff to effectively use new technologies and provide ongoing support
  • Develop and maintain a roadmap for continuous innovation, maintenance, and enhancement of the smart factory operating systems and software
Qualifications You Must Have
  • Typically requires a University Degree and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience.
Qualification We Prefer
  • Degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Digital Technology, Computer Science or related discipline
  • Working experience with machine integration and/or design
  • Experience and knowledge of connected factory technologies, such as IoT platforms & connectivity, machine protocols and network connectivity, automation systems, MES, ERP, and data analytics tools
  • Ability to communicate across functions and engage with stakeholders at all levels
  • Familiarity with industry standards, safety regulations, and best practices in manufacturing and technology
  • Ability to travel as needed (anticipated 15-20%)
