Job summary

HMC Architects seeks a Principal in Charge in our San Jose, CA office to plan, coordinate, and oversee major projects through all development phases, directing staff and leading client relationships.

The role requires a CA-licensed architect with 12+ years of experience, plus 2+ years of senior leadership and on-site availability for 3 days per week. The salary range is $171,323–$264,070, with equity, 401(k), and comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• Architectural degree from an accredited university.
• Licensed architect, preferably in California.
• Minimum of 12 years’ experience in production and coordination of documents.
• Experience with school districts, private school systems and/or higher education clients, municipalities and government entities such as DSA.
• Must be on-site in an HMC studio to lead staff a minimum of 3 days per week.

Responsibilities

• Lead major projects through all development phases and direct staff.
• Manage budgets, schedules, and client contracts across teams.
• Develop and maintain client relationships and market presence.
• Oversee design documents, QA, and coordination across consultants.
• Direct project staffing, go/no-go decisions, and value analysis.
