Job summary

Uber is seeking a Principal Engineer, Machine Learning / AI to lead the development of large-scale Foundation Models trained on Uber’s data. This hands-on technical leadership role shapes model architectures, training strategies, and scaling across multiple engineering and product teams.

You will drive representation learning, ML impact, and scalable infrastructure while guiding architectural decisions and best practices.

Qualifications

• BS degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
• 10+ years of software engineering experience with proven technical leadership and innovation.
• Extensive experience designing, building, and scaling deep learning systems and large-scale AI infrastructure.
• MS/PhD in Computer Science or related field is a plus.
• Hands-on experience with Foundation Models, pretraining, and distributed training architectures.

Responsibilities

• Architect and build large-scale Foundation Models using proprietary data.
• Define the technical direction for architecture, training approaches, and scaling.
• Advance representation learning with embeddings for downstream ML models.
• Drive company-wide ML impact by partnering across Mobility, Delivery, Earner, Merchant, and Consumer experiences.
• Build scalable ML capabilities including training infrastructure and distributed compute.
• Provide deep technical leadership and establish best practices for large-scale model development.
• Collaborate with senior leaders, researchers, and engineers to align initiatives.
• Remain hands-on and contribute to critical decisions and model development.
