Job summary

Consumers Energy is seeking a Principal Electric Engineer to act as SME for LVD design and to lead engineering, design, and governance across large complex projects for distribution, generation, and storage systems. You will own standard work documents, represent the company at industry groups, and drive process improvements across multiple organizations.

The role requires coordinating with engineers, technicians, and external stakeholders to ensure standards, schedules, and budgets are met

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program with 7+ years in advanced electrical engineering.
  • Engineering degree from non-ABET program plus PE license with 7+ years in senior electrical engineering capacity.

Responsibilities

  • Direct or coordinate installation, maintenance, and testing activities to meet specs and customer requirements.
  • Prepare reports and provide technical support across departments.
  • Estimate material, labor, and costs for budget planning and procurement.
  • Design, control, and implement electrical systems and serve as primary client contact for project matters.
  • Oversee development and implementation of electrical systems.
  • Operate CAD/engineering software to execute engineering tasks.
  • Prepare technical drawings, specifications, and contract documents; monitor progress and budget.
  • Collaborate with customers and teams to resolve issues and report to upper management.

Job description

Location

This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday assigned to any of the following Service Centers; Jackson, Owosso, Lansing, Battle Creek, Hamilton, Kalamazoo, Adrian, or Hastings. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Principal Electric Engineer is a departmental subject matter expert of electrical engineer. This role is responsible for engineering and design of large complex project for the sustainable operation of our distribution, generation, and storage system. This role collaborates with a team of engineers and technicians and coordinates across the organization and external stakeholders, on large complex technical projects within their subject matter of expertise. They are specialist in electrical utility systems and products design, layout, implementations.

The Principal Engineer serves as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for LVD Design and is responsible for maintaining technical standards and governance across the organization. Key responsibilities include ownership of Standard Work Documents, representation of CE at industry conferences and working groups (e.g., EPRI), and driving continuous improvement initiatives related to workflows, engineering processes, and work techniques across multiple organizations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensuring compliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements by directing or coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testing activities.
  • Writing reports and compiling data regarding existing and potential electrical engineering projects and studies and provide technical support to other departments and personnel as needed.
  • Preparing specifications for purchases of electrical equipment and materials and estimating material, labor, or construction costs for budget preparation.
  • Design, control, and implement electrical systems and products and serve as the primary point of contact with clients for all electrical engineering project matters.
  • Manage the development and implementation of electrical systems.
  • Performing a wide range of engineering tasks by operating computer-assisted design or engineering software and equipment.
  • Designing, maintaining, implementing, or improving electrical instruments, facilities, components, equipment products, or systems for industrial, commercial, or domestic purposes. Prepare contract documents, including specifications, drawings, and addenda.
  • Collaborate with customers, coworkers, and others to discuss existing or potential engineering products or projects and monitor project progress and budget, and prepare reports for upper management.
  • Ensuring that installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements by preparing electrical systems specifications, technical drawings, or topographical maps and Investigate and resolve project issues in a timely manner.
  • Establishing construction, manufacturing, or installation standards or specifications by performing a wide range of detailed calculations.
  • Oversee and manage the installation of electrical equipment and components.
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Knowledge of applicable codes related to electronic engineering

  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of electric utility distribution planning, construction, operation, and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of electric utility operation (i.e. generation, transmission and distribution of three phase alternating current power).
  • Knowledge of distribution planning principles is an asset.
Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with seven (7) or more years of experience in an advanced electrical engineering capacity.
    • [OR] Engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with seven (7) or more years of experience in an advanced electrical engineering capacity.
