Consumers Energy, based in Michigan, seeks an Associate System Protection Engineer to support the design, analysis, and protection of voltage power systems. You will assist in developing protection philosophies and sequences for generation, transmission, and distribution, working with the T&HVD protection team to optimize system performance.

The role involves field testing, modeling, and coordination with stakeholders, with onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at the Jackson, MI

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited engineering degree or PE licensure.
• Knowledge of protection schemes and power system protection principles.
• Experience with substation automation systems is a plus.

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Associate System Protection Engineer will support the design, analysis, and protection of voltage power systems. The incumbent will aid the implementation of protection schemes for our transmission and distribution systems by completing tasks in support of more senior engineers as directed and delegated. Help with the development of control philosophies and sequences for our generation, transmission, and distribution systems.

The Transmission and High Voltage Distribution (T&HVD) System Protection team is responsible for all aspects of protection of Consumers Energy’s 46 and 138 kV electric systems. By utilizing our individual and collective expertise, we set up and configure the protection schemes and equipment used on our T&HVD systems while working continuously with many companywide stakeholders to ensure all protection devices are applied and configured in a manner that optimizes system performance. T&HVD System Protection supports all T&HVD projects from the conceptual stage, through the engineering and commission stages and into long term operation and maintenance. We serve as subject matter experts for T&HVD protection equipment evaluations, protection device applications, protection device modeling, fault analysis, short-circuit calculations, protection of real time system operating conditions, NERC protection standards compliance and more.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Support the design and implementation of protection schemes for voltage power systems as directed by more senior engineers.
• Assist in the development of models and simulations to test the performance of protection devices under various conditions.
• Perform field tests of protection systems to verify their proper operation.
• Maintain accurate records of protection system designs and modifications.
• Work on projects related to the installation or upgrade of protection systems.
• Take direction from other more senior engineers assist in ensuring that the protection system interacts properly with the rest of the power system.
• Provide data for review and input on technical reports documenting the design of protection systems.
• Assist in the development of new protection devices and systems.
• Accompany senior engineers on field tests of protection systems to verify their proper operation. Maintain accurate records of protection system designs and modifications.
• Other duties as assigned or may be necessary.

Education/Experience

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with 0 - 2 years of experience with substation automation systems.
