Job Purpose

The Primary School Mandarin Chinese teachers collaborate with a team providing Mandarin as an Additional Language instruction to students from 5K to Grade 5. They employ effective language acquisition practices to support proficiency-based groups, from novice to advanced levels. Teachers also co-plan with colleagues across languages to deliver content aligned with the Primary Years Programme (PYP), emphasizing inquiry-based, transdisciplinary learning. An inclusive classroom environment fostering a sense of belonging is essential.

Position Details

  • Position Duration: 10 months
  • Role: Teacher
  • Hours: 40 hours/week (Full-time)
  • FLSA Status: Exempt
  • Reports To: Head of Primary School
  • Start Date: August 1, 2025

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate and co-teach with grade-level colleagues to deliver inquiry-based, transdisciplinary lessons.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learner needs, using data to inform lesson design.
  • Build positive relationships and a supportive classroom environment fostering respect, belonging, and engagement.
  • Create an inclusive, safe space that respects students’ linguistic, cultural, racial, and ethnic identities, collaborating with families and support staff.
  • Establish routines and classroom expectations that promote respectful behavior and independence.
  • Design engaging inquiry-based lessons that inspire a love for learning and critical thinking.
  • Apply best practices in dual language instruction, supporting students at various proficiency levels across multiple modalities.
  • Use assessments effectively to monitor progress and adapt instruction accordingly.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse cultural and linguistic groups, employing culturally responsive strategies.
  • Maintain a flexible, collaborative mindset, open to feedback and new approaches.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in relevant field
  • At least 3 years of primary teaching experience
  • Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese; additional proficiency in English preferred
  • Experience or familiarity with inquiry-based, transdisciplinary, or IB PYP environments preferred, but strong applicants from other curricula are encouraged
  • Enthusiasm for working in multicultural, multilingual settings
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Knowledge of second language acquisition methods and classroom application
  • Experience with Restorative Practices and/or Responsive Classroom approaches
