Qualifications

Job description

Akicita Federal is hiring a Primary Care Physician to deliver outpatient primary and urgent care services to members of the Navajo Nation through the Indian Health Service (IHS) Navajo Area program, with placements supporting communities in Red Mesa and Teec Nos Pos, AZ. This is meaningful, community-centered medicine serving one of the largest Native American populations in the United States across a reservation spanning more than 25,000 square miles. Assignments are flexible, ranging from short-term (13-week) rotations to long-term (one-year) engagements to meet the ongoing and urgent care needs of IHS patients.

Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive outpatient primary care services to American Indian and Alaska Native patients in a federally operated health center setting.
  • Diagnose and treat acute and chronic conditions presenting in both primary care and urgent care contexts.
  • Develop and manage individualized care plans in alignment with IHS clinical standards and culturally appropriate practices.
  • Document patient encounters, clinical findings and treatment decisions accurately and in a timely manner within the electronic health record (EHR) system.
  • Coordinate with interdisciplinary care teams—including nursing, behavioral health, and specialty services—to support whole-patient care.
  • Respond to unplanned and urgent patient needs as they arise within the clinic environment.
  • Support preventive care initiatives and health education consistent with IHS public health priorities for the Navajo Nation community.
  • Patient Volume: Avg 12 per day.
  • Support: Advanced Practice, Nursing, Radiology, Lab, Behavioral Health.
Qualifications
  • Prior experience providing care to Native American, Alaska Native, or other underserved and rural populations.
  • Familiarity with Indian Health Service clinical workflows, policies, or the IHS/Tribal/Urban (I/T/U) health system.
  • Experience working in frontier or rural health settings with limited specialty backup resources.
  • Comfort with high-acuity urgent care presentations in a primary care environment.
  • Cultural awareness or prior engagement with Navajo Nation communities or similar tribal health programs.
