Smurfit Westrock in Stevenson, AL is seeking an experienced Pressure Vessel & Mechanical Integrity Engineer to lead our site’s integrity programs. You will oversee the Pressure Vessel and Tank Integrity Program and the Safety Relief Valve program, ensuring compliance with industry standards and internal policies.

You will coordinate inspections, manage documentation, develop risk-based inspection plans, and partner with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and EHS to mitigate risks.

Qualifications

  • BS in mechanical engineering or related field required.
  • Strong knowledge of pressure vessel, storage tank, piping, and pressure relief device inspection.
  • Familiarity with ASME BPV Code, API inspection standards, and OSHA PSM.

  • Lead site Pressure Vessel and Tank Integrity Program.

Opportunity Summary

As the Pressure Vessel & Mechanical Integrity Engineer, you will be responsible for leading and overseeing the site's Pressure Vessel and Tank Integrity Program as well as the Safety Relief Valve Integrity Program. This role will ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, company, and industry standards while driving continuous improvement in asset integrity, risk mitigation, inspection effectiveness, and program documentation. Additional responsibilities include coordinating inspections, managing mechanical integrity databases and documentation, developing risk-based inspection strategies, facilitating corrective action implementation, partnering with Operations and Maintenance teams to address integrity concerns, and serving as the site Subject Matter Expert (SME) for pressure equipment integrity and relief device management.

What You Will Impact Smurfit Westrock
  • Lead the execution, administration, and continuous improvement of the site's Pressure Vessel and Tank Integrity Program.
  • Manage the Safety Relief Valve Integrity Program, including inspection, testing, repair, replacement, certification, and documentation requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable ASME, API, OSHA PSM, and corporate mechanical integrity standards.
  • Coordinate internal and external inspections of pressure vessels, tanks, piping systems, and relief devices.
  • Develop and maintain inspection schedules, integrity assessments, and risk-based inspection plans.
  • Track and manage inspection findings, recommendations, and corrective actions through completion.
  • Maintain accurate asset records, inspection reports, certifications, and regulatory documentation.
  • Partner with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and EHS teams to identify and mitigate equipment integrity risks.
  • Analyze equipment failures and integrity-related incidents to determine root causes and implement preventive measures.
  • Provide technical guidance on repair, alteration, replacement, and fitness-for-service evaluations for pressure equipment.
  • Support capital projects and facility modifications by ensuring pressure equipment designs meet applicable codes and standards.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on reliability, equipment life extension, risk reduction, and regulatory compliance.
  • Serve as the site Subject Matter Expert (SME) for mechanical integrity, pressure vessels, tanks, and pressure relief systems.
What You Need To Succeed
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • Strong understanding of pressure vessel, storage tank, piping, and pressure relief device inspection requirements.
  • Knowledge of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, API inspection standards, OSHA Process Safety Management, and mechanical integrity principles.
  • Experience managing inspection programs, regulatory compliance activities, and technical documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify risks and drive corrective actions to closure.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex technical information to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, EHS, and external contractors.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and compliance deadlines.
  • Ownership mindset with a strong commitment to safety, compliance, and operational excellence.
  • Results-oriented with the ability to drive continuous improvement and sustainable program performance.
