Job summary

The Minnesota Historical Society seeks a Design Intern for MNHS Press, to assist with print production, design, marketing, editorial and administration. You will work with staff who share knowledge of the book industry and tackle independent projects in a mixed office setting.

This part-time internship runs Jan 19, 2027 to May 23, 2027 with seminars and a final presentation. Ideal candidates are undergrad/grad students with interests in graphic design, marketing, or communications, and

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student, or have graduated within the past 12 months.
• Ideal candidates may have degrees in graphic design, marketing, business, English, art, history or communications.
• Experience with graphic design software (Adobe Creative Suite).
• Strong research, communication and organizational skills.
• Interest in book design and production; able to work independently.

Responsibilities

• Assist Marketing staff to create print and digital book promotions.
• Design and layout academic print or electronic direct mailing pieces.
• Provide production and design assistance for press kits and related content.
• Meet with Editorial to learn department functions.
• Conduct library and Internet research for potential books/anthologies/reprints.
• Research photos and art for covers and interiors.
• Attend acquisitions meetings.
• Meet with Production Manager to learn department functions and attend meetings.
• Produce design assets including image scanning and photo touch-up.
• Support new title production and layout opportunities.
• Attend staff meetings and interact with MNHS Press leadership.
• Create charts, graphs, and PowerPoint presentations for publications.
