Job summary

The Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) invites applications for the MNHS Press Design Intern position in St. Paul, a part-time, temporary role from January 19, 2027 to May 23, 2027.

The intern supports print production, design, marketing, editorial and administration with staff guidance. You will gain exposure to book publishing processes, collaborate across departments, and work on projects from promotions to cover and interior design, with seminars and final presentations.

Qualifications

• Current student or recent graduate (within 12 months)
• Ideal candidates study graphic design, marketing, business, English, art, history or communications
• Working knowledge of graphic design software (Adobe Creative Suite)
• General research & communication skills
• Interest in book design and production
• Top-notch organizational skills
• Aptitude/interest in social media/marketing
• Ability to work independently
• Experience with Microsoft Office and Google suite preferred

Responsibilities

• Assist Marketing staff to create print and digital book promotions
• Design and layout academic print or electronic direct mailing pieces
• Provide production and design assistance for press kits and content
• Meet with Editorial to learn department functions
• Conduct library and Internet research for potential books/anthologies/reprints
• Conduct photo and art research for covers and interiors
• Attend acquisitions meetings
• Meet with Production Manager to learn department functions and attend production meetings
• Production and design work with publication assets including image scanning, photo repair/touch up and cartographic projects
• Provide production and design support for new titles including cover/interior design opportunities
• Attend staff meetings; meet with the Director, MNHS Press and other staff to learn publishing business
• Design assistance, creation of charts, graphs, and PowerPoint presentations
