Overview

Preservation architects play a vital role in the preservation and restoration of historical and cultural buildings and sites. As a preservation architect you will be responsible for assessing the condition of existing structures, developing plans for their repair and restoration, and overseeing the implementation of these plans to ensure the preservation of important landmarks for future generations.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct thorough assessments of historical buildings and sites to determine their current condition and identify any potential risks or issues.
• Develop detailed preservation plans that include recommendations for repairs, renovations, or additions while maintaining the original architectural integrity.
• Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and other professionals to implement preservation plans in a timely and cost‑effective manner.
• Obtain necessary approvals from local authorities and historic preservation organizations before beginning any restoration work.
• Monitor the progress of restoration projects to ensure that they are following established guidelines and adhering to budgetary constraints.
• Conduct regular site visits to assess ongoing work and provide guidance as needed.
• Document all stages of the restoration process including research, design drawings, construction documents, specifications, cost estimates, and progress photos.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in architecture or a related field from an accredited university.
• At least 3 years of experience in architectural design or historic preservation work.
• Knowledge of historical building materials, construction techniques, codes, standards, and guidelines related to historic preservation.
• Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines.
• Excellent communication skills with a keen attention to detail.
• Proficient in AutoCAD or other drafting software.
