Job summary

Western Rock Products, a CRH Company, is seeking a prep crew laborer to support highway, grade and paving crews. You will perform ground preparation, assist with paving, and handle materials while maintaining a safe, efficient worksite. Requirements include a high school diploma or GED and 1–2 years of related experience, a valid driver's license, and the ability to read and write effectively.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • 1–2 years related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write correspondences and memos.
  • Ability to perform basic math using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

Responsibilities

  • Ground Preparation / Road Base Work: grade and level subgrade and base materials, remove debris, shovel and spread aggregates, operate hand tools and compactors, set grade stakes.
  • Paving & Grade Crew Support: rake and level material, assist with shaping roadway surfaces, signal equipment operators for alignment.
  • Material Handling & Site Setup: load/unload materials, assist with traffic control, keep tools and site organized.
  • General Labor Duties: digging, sweeping, and operating small power tools as needed, assist with minor adjustments to structures.
  • Safety & Compliance: follow OSHA/MSHA safety procedures and report hazards.

Position Overview

Prep crew laborer supports highway, grade and paving crews by performing manual labor tasks required to prepare the ground for road construction. This includes clearing, grading, leveling, and assisting with base and paving operations.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties And Functions)
Ground Preparation / Road Base Work
  • Prepare ground surfaces for road construction, including grading and leveling subgrade and base materials.
  • Remove debris, obstacles, and unsuitable material from the construction path.
  • Shovel, rake, and spread aggregate, dirt, and road base materials.
  • Operate hand tools and compactors to level and compact base layers.
  • Set grade stakes and string lines to guide base preparation and paving work.
Paving & Grade Crew Support
  • Assist paving crews by raking and leveling material behind paving equipment.
  • Walk alongside pavers to help shape and finish roadway surfaces.
  • Signal equipment operators to ensure proper alignment, material placement, and safe movement.
Material Handling & Site Setup
  • Load, unload, move, and distribute materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Assist with traffic control setup (cones, barricades, signage).
  • Clean tools, maintain equipment, and keep the job site organized.
General Labor Duties
  • Perform manual labor such as digging, sweeping, and compacting materials.
  • Operate small power tools (e.g., saws, jackhammers) as needed.
  • Assist with minor adjustments to structures such as manholes or drainage features.
Safety & Compliance
  • Follow OSHA/MSHA and company safety procedures at all times.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and report hazards or issues to supervisors.

Education/Experience
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
  • One to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
