Job summary

Riverside Health System is seeking a Pre-Assessment Registered Nurse (RN) in Gloucester, VA to perform comprehensive preoperative assessments for surgical patients, coordinating with surgeons, anesthesia, and scheduling teams to ensure readiness and safety.

Qualifications include a Diploma Nurse Program, 2 years acute care nursing, and an RN license in VA or a compact state with CPR/BLS, with perioperative certifications preferred.

Qualifications

• Program graduate required.
• Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred.
• 2 years acute care nursing required.
• RN license in VA or compact state on hire (Required).
• CPR/BLS certification on hire (Required).
• Certified Perioperative/Perianesthesia certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs comprehensive preoperative nursing assessments via telephone, virtual, or in person encounters. Escalates abnormal findings to leadership or anesthesia providers.
• Reviews patient history, medications, allergies, diagnostic results, and prior anesthesia/surgical history; coordinates testing and clearances.
• Provides patient education on preoperative instructions, medications, NPO guidelines, and day-of-surgery expectations.
• Collaborates with anesthesia, surgeons, OR scheduling, and perioperative teams to support safe planning and reduce delays.
• Ensures accurate, complete, and timely documentation in the EMR.
• Participates in performance improvement to optimize perioperative workflows and outcomes.
