Job summary

Southwest ISD is seeking a paraprofessional/pre-Kinder aide to assist classroom teachers in achieving instructional goals and to help individual students or small groups reach the class skill level. The role supports a well-organized classroom and maximizes student engagement with available resources.

Responsibilities include reading with students, monitoring behavior, and serving as a key contact for substitutes while maintaining confidentiality and professional conduct throughout the school

Qualifications

• Education/Certification: High school diploma or GED and ESSA or NCLB Certificate OR Associates degree or 48 college hours from an accredited college; fingerprinting check required.
• Special Knowledge/Skills: Verbal and written communication; strong organizational skills; good classroom management; maintain confidentiality.
• Experience: Experience working with children preferred.

Responsibilities

• Communicate and work with students, parents, community, coworkers, and administration.
• Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning introduced by the teacher.
• Read to students, listen to students read, and participate in oral activities with students.
• Inform the regular teacher about any problems or special information regarding a student.
• Monitor students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom.
• Serve as the primary information resource for substitute teachers in the regular teacher's absence.
• Maintain high ethical standards and confidentiality of student information.
• Attend to daily attendance and punctuality as essential job functions.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Primary Purpose:

To assist the classroom teacher in achieving teaching objectives by working with individual students or small groups to help them achieve the skill levels of the class as a whole. To provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning class environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification: High school diploma or GED and ESSA or NCLB Certificate OR Associates degree or 48 college hours from an accredited college Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting check

Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing Good organizational skills Good classroom management skills Maintain confidentiality

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

• Ability to communicate and work with students, parents, community, co-workers and administration.
• Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
• Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in other forms of oral communication with students.
• Alerts the regular teacher to any problems or special information about an individual student.
• Assist in monitoring the students throughout the school day, inside and outside of classroom.
• Serves as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
• Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.
• Daily attendance and punctuality are essential functions of the job.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals

Posture: Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling

Lifting: May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities; occasional light lifting and carrying (up to 40+ lbs.)

Mental Demands: Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written, ability to read selected instructional material instructions; ability to maintain emotional control under stress; patience and tolerance
