Job summary

United States Steel Corporation in Gary, IN seeks a hands-on Machinist to maintain rotating machinery. You’ll review blueprints, set up manual engines and turret lathes, and perform precise machining to keep production running.

You’ll measure with micrometers, interpret drawings, assemble components, and occasionally support CNC repairs. The role requires reliability, safety discipline, and willingness to rotate shifts with overtime; experience with Mazak/Okuma is a plus.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• At least 1 year of manufacturing/industrial experience.
• Ability to read and understand blueprints and drawings.
• Proficiency with cutting tools and measuring devices.
• Pass a written MTM test and a hands-on Manual Machinist Assessment.
• Solid manual machining fundamentals and strong attention to detail.
• Punctuality, consistent attendance, and self-direction to support seamless operations.
• Commitment to safety procedures/guidelines; PPE includes hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, metatarsal boots, and respirator when necessary.
• Willingness to work rotating 8-hour shifts; overtime as needed.
• Preferred: understanding of G & M codes and familiarity with Okuma and Mazak CNC controls.
• Preferred: experience with Mazak, Okuma, or Toyoda CNC mills or lathes.
• Nice to have: Journeyman Machinist card.

Responsibilities

• Interpret and work from blueprints and technical drawings to deliver accurate parts and assemblies.
• Assemble components with hands-on mechanical aptitude and sound workmanship.
• Apply working knowledge of CNC operation; programming experience is a plus.
• Troubleshoot and support CNC machine repair when needed.
