The Precision Machinist specializes in setting up and operating CNC or NC machines and machining centers. Sets up and operates conventional, special-purpose and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and non-metallic parts and fits and assembles complete parts into complete units or assemblies. He or she applies knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures shop mathematics, maintainability of materials, quality assurance and layout techniques.
Precision Machinist reports to the Manufacturing Manager of Precision Machining, Foreperson, Assistant Foreperson or Job Leaders.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications or a sample part(s) to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations and set-up requirements.
- Measures, marks and scribes dimensions and reference points on materials or work-piece as guides for subsequent machining.
- Selects, aligns and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials on machines, such as mills, lathes or others.
- Calculates and programs controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow and depth and angle of cut or enters commands to retrieve, edit or input computerized machine control media.
- Analyze and resolve any set-up non-conformance.
- Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications using precision measuring instruments and record data on in-process reports if required.
- Sets up and operates machine on a trial run to verify accuracy of machine set-up or programmed control data.
- Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly and verifies conformance if required.
- Adhere to corporate philosophies and procedures.
- Look for improvements regarding all aspects of Manufacturing.
- Seek support from Manufacturing Manager of Precision Machining, Foreperson or Job Leader when overburdened.
Secondary Responsibilities:
- May install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines and equipment and test the unit to ensure functionality.
- May confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
- Debug support as required.
- May assist toolmaker/machine builder in assembly of larger projects.
- May train employees if required.
- May have secondary position on a “team” such as safety or ISO auditing.
Job Qualifications:
Training and Experience: Between four and ten years of trade school, vocational education, work experience or apprenticeship.
Specific Competencies:
- The employee is required to stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to the floor.
- Exert 20 to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or exert 10 to 25 lbs. of force frequently and/or exert up to ten pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Ability to handle changing priorities and multiple tasks.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Exercises good judgment.
- Ability to take direction.
- Ability to work independently.
Work Environment:
The employee is subject to high noise levels from operating machines, physical hazards from moving equipment and machine parts, breathing fumes, dust and mist. The employee’s skin may be exposed to oils and cutting fluids.
The employee may be required to follow other job-related instructions and to perform other job-related duties as requested subject to all applicable state and federal laws.
Visual Acuity: Acuity and accommodation are required for reading machine dial gauges, blue prints and documents.
Hearing Acuity: Ability to monitor machine sounds to identify and diagnose changes in order to take appropriate action.
