Job summary

Benchmark Utility Services is seeking an Equipment Operator to perform excavation and earthmoving for utility construction and site work. The role centers on operating medium to large excavators to dig trenches, move materials, and prepare sites for installation.

The position requires following strict safety guidelines and coordinating with the crew to ensure precision and productivity. A minimum of 3 years' experience and OSHA familiarity are preferred; a valid driver’s license is a plus.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of experience operating excavation or heavy construction equipment.
• Experience performing precision excavation near utilities and structures.
• Knowledge of trench safety, shoring, and excavation best practices.
• OSHA certification preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and willingness to tow small trailers is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Operate excavators, mini-excavators, loaders, and related earthmoving equipment for trenching and backfill.
• Perform precise excavation around live utilities with safety and Miss Utility guidelines.
• Conduct daily inspections and routine maintenance of equipment.
• Follow trench safety, shoring, and barricading standards at all times.
• Assist the crew with trench preparation, pipe installation, backfill, and site cleanup.
• Communicate with spotters and crew using hand signals and radios for safe coordination.
• Load, unload, and position materials safely using proper rigging techniques.
• Maintain a clean, organized work area and comply with OSHA safety standards.
• Document equipment use, inspections, and fuel logs as required.
• Support general labor and site tasks as assigned.
