Job summary

Mississippi State University seeks a dynamic Pre-Health Advising Counselor to guide students and alumni through career decisions, prerequisite analyses, and graduate school applications. You will deliver targeted workshops, develop program materials, and maintain the Pre-Health Advising Office online presence.

Collaborating with university staff and student groups, you will assess needs, report outcomes, and support program development while occasionally supervising student workers and handling

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and student organizations to design resources and programs; build partnerships.
  • Participate on unit-wide committees and projects.
  • Perform administrative activities such as scheduling and data management.
  • May supervise lower graded staff or students; train and evaluate advisement activities.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Position Function

Provide advising for pre-health-interested students regarding academic requirements, co-curricular requirements, and professional school requirements as well as support for students and alumni who apply for professional health programs; maintain robust online repository of information about careers in health and allied health professions and organize correlated programming.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Provide career counseling services to students and alumni interested in pre-health careers.
  2. Provide students with guidance and information regarding career decision-making, self-assessment, career options, goal setting, career research, the job/internship search process and graduate school admissions. Deliver a variety of career workshops and programs on such topics to help students prepare for successful transitions to careers and/or graduate school.
  3. As a team member deliver a range of programs that serve specific needs of students who are preparing and applying for health-related professional schools.
  4. Develop tailored e-mail communications and other written materials customized to pre-health profession students. Write and maintain specific sections of the Pre-Health Advising Office web site and social media outlets, and contribute to unit publications.
  5. Conduct ongoing needs assessments/surveys; collect and report on data related to service delivery and outcomes or marketplace trends for students.
  6. Collaborate with staff/faculty and other members of the University community from colleges/schools, student service units, and student organizations regarding strategic design and development of resources and programs/workshops; build effective partnerships through regular communication, collaboration, and consultation.
  7. Participate on unit-wide committees and projects.
  8. Performs supplemental administrative activities such as scheduling meetings and interviews, securing requested information, and verifying and maintaining computerized data files.
  9. May supervise lower graded staff and/or student employees; may participate in training and evaluative sessions and recommend methods to improve advisement activities.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree
and
1 year experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a related field. Advanced experience and knowledge advising pre-health professions students. Working knowledge of MSU's core curriculum, regulations, and policies.
  • Experience working in the health care sector.
