Job description

Summary

LPN uses practical nursing knowledge and skills to provide care according to the patient's condition and treatment plan. The care provided should be therapeutic, supportive, and individualized. Additionally, the LPN is responsible for patient/family/caregiver education to ensure compliance with the care plan and to promote health and wellness.

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed only if qualified citizens are unavailable, per VA Policy.
  • Education: Graduate of an approved school of practical or vocational nursing, accredited by NLNAC at the time of completion.
  • Licensure: Full, active, unrestricted licensure as an LPN/LVN in the U.S. or its territories.
  • Licenses with restrictions or revoked licenses may limit appointment eligibility, in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English as per 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Current VHA employees may qualify under the Grandfathering Provision.

Grade Determinations:

  • GS-3: Meets basic requirements.
  • GS-4: Six months of qualifying experience or graduation from an approved school plus one year of relevant experience; or graduation from a 24-month program.
  • GS-5: One year of experience at GS-4 or equivalent; ability to provide full range of nursing care; and experience in patient education, medication administration, emergency response, and equipment management.
  • GS-6: One additional year of experience at GS-5; proficiency in patient care based on patient conditions; ability to recognize urgent situations; and skills in supporting complex procedures and education.

Preferred Experience: 2+ years outpatient clinic experience. More details available at VA Qualification Standards.

Duties
  • This LPN position is at the Community-Based Outpatient Clinic in Waynesville, Missouri, within Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.
  • Provides patient-centered, therapeutic, supportive, and individualized care.
  • Uses judgment to select procedures and treatments, accurately documents patient information, and ensures work is reviewable by RNs or MDs/DOs.
  • Additional duties include patient education, medication administration, emergency response, equipment safety, and supporting complex diagnostic procedures.
  • Serves as a preceptor and actively seeks educational opportunities to enhance nursing skills.
