Summary

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) uses practical nursing knowledge and skills to provide care tailored to the patient's condition and treatment plan. The role involves delivering therapeutic, supportive, and individualized care, as well as educating patients, families, and caregivers to ensure compliance with the care plan and to promote health and wellness.

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be considered tentatively but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled.

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens are unavailable, in accordance with VA policy.
• Education: Graduate of an approved school of practical or vocational nursing, accredited by NLNAC at the time of completion.
• Licensure: Full, active, and unrestricted licensure as an LPN/LVN in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
• Licensure Restrictions: Licenses revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or placed on probation may restrict employment per VA policy.
• English Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English as per 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Grandfathering provisions may apply for current VHA employees.

Grade Determinations:

• GS-3: Meets basic requirements.
• GS-4: Six months of qualifying experience or graduation from an approved school plus one year of relevant experience.
• GS-5: One year of experience at GS-4 level or equivalent, with demonstrated ability to provide comprehensive nursing care, educate patients/families, and work effectively with the healthcare team.
• GS-6: One additional year of experience at GS-5 level, proficient in patient care, medication administration, emergency response, and patient education, with the ability to serve as a preceptor and seek educational opportunities.

Preferred Experience: At least 2 years of outpatient clinic experience.
