McHenry is a city in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. It is a suburb and part of the Chicago metropolitan area, located about 37 miles northwest of Chicago. According to the 2020 census, the population was 27,135. McHenry was once the county seat of McHenry County, which previously included adjoining Lake County to the east. Positions are located in the McHenry CBOC.
Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens, in accordance with VA Policy.
- English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English, as per VA Handbook 5005.
- Licensure: Must hold a full, active, current, and unrestricted license as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth (e.g., Puerto Rico), or District of Columbia. (Copy required)
- Licenses revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or in probationary status may restrict appointment, in accordance with chapter 3, section B, paragraph 16.
Grade Determinations:
Qualifications must demonstrate the competence required for each grade:
- GS-03: Basic requirements only.
- GS-04: Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN, or graduation from an approved school plus one year of nursing care experience, or graduation from a 24-month approved school.
- GS-05: At least 1 year of experience at GS-4 or equivalent, with demonstrated ability to provide full nursing care, educate patients, and work as part of a team.
- GS-06: One additional year of experience at GS-5, proficient in providing care, recognizing urgent situations, administering medications, and supporting complex procedures.
Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, standing, walking, reaching, finger dexterity, rapid coordination, color distinction. A health exam is required prior to assignment, with periodic re-evaluations.
Duties
- Document patient care thoroughly in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Recognize and respond to urgent or emergent patient situations, seeking higher-level assistance as needed.
- Participate in team meetings, review schedules, and assist in various clinical tasks including vital signs, medication administration, specimen collection, and patient education.
- Assist with minor procedures, support telehealth services, and ensure supplies are stocked and equipment is sanitized.
- Respond to medical emergencies, participate in care coordination, and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
- Support orientation and training of new staff, and uphold professional standards of conduct.
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. No financial disclosure required.
