Job summary

Siemens Mobility seeks an experienced Power System Protection Engineer to join our Power Systems Engineering team in a role based at either Wendell, NC or Boulder, CO. You will design, test, and implement protection and control schemes for power substations, lead FAT/SAT activities, and support commissioning on site.

Ideal candidates bring 5+ years in protection engineering, strong schematics and IEC 61850/DNP/Modbus knowledge, and willingness to travel 50–70%. Relocation assistance is available.

Responsibilities

• Design, configure, and test protective relay systems for substations to ensure reliability.
• Lead FAT and SAT activities with thorough testing procedures and commissioning scripts.
• Hands-on use of Omicron and Doble test equipment and protection schemes.
• Develop and implement protection and control schemes aligned with standards and customer needs.
• Guide project teams across the full lifecycle from design to commissioning.
• Serve as primary technical liaison with clients, providing on-site support and commissioning expertise.

We’re seeking authoritative engineers in power transmission and distribution, specializing in substation automation and protection relay engineering, to join our Power Systems Engineering team.

We are looking for experienced Power System Protection Engineers. This position will be based at either our Wendell, North Carolina headquarters or our site in Boulder, Colorado. We offer relocation assistance for eligible candidates. Local candidates are encouraged to apply.

You’ll make a difference by:

• Design, configure, and test protective relay systemsfor sophisticated power systems and substations, ensuring high reliability and system integrity.
• CompleteFactory Acceptance Testing (FAT)andSite Acceptance Testing (SAT)—skilled in preparing comprehensive test procedures, commissioning scripts, and leading successful project delivery.
• Hands-on experience with advancedrelay test equipmentsuch asOmicronandDoble, with deep knowledge of protection schemes for transmission, distribution, and industrial applications.
• Developand implement protection and control schemesthat align with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and customer-specific needs.
• Be a proactive technical leader and collaborator, trusted toguide project teams, solve complex challenges, and get results across all phases of the project lifecycle—from initial design to final commissioning.
• Experienced serving as theprimary technical collaborate with clients, providing on‑site support, troubleshooting, and commissioning expertise with a focus on performance and customer satisfaction.

You’ll win us over by having the following qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, or computer engineering.
• Five (5) or more years of engineering experience in power systemsprotection engineering.
• Project Technical Lead experience.
• Applied knowledge of Power Protection on: Overcurrent / Over-Undervoltage, Transformer Differential, Motor Protection, High and Low Impedance Busbar Differential, Generator Protection, MV transfer schemes and reverse interlocking schemes.
• Ability to read and fully understand DC and AC schematics, three- and one-line diagrams for Medium and/or High Voltage substations systems.
• Advanced knowledge of at least one of the automation products and associated software from vendors such as Siemens, GE, SEL or ABB
• Experience implementing communication protocols such as IEC61850 (MMS/GOOSE/SMV), DNP, Modbus, IEC60870-5-101/103/104, Profinet, Profibus, OPC, for power automation systems.
• Substation control and protection commissioning experience.
• Experience in Factory and Site testing of protection relays
• Ability and willingness to travel 50 to 70% depending on business need, project assignments and requirements.
• Legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis without sponsorship now or in the future.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Applied knowledge of Power Protection on: High Voltage Line Differential and Distance Protection, Generator Protection of large generating units
• Siprotec 4 and Siprotec 5 experience
• Communication Network Technologies, including Design, Configuration, and troubleshooting of ethernet switches for protection applications such as IEC-6185 Process Bus and GOOSE applications.
• Advanced Programming skills and experience with programming languages used in protection systems.

The pay range for this position is $74,970 - $128,520 annually with a target incentive of 5% of the base salary. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and premium geographic location.
