Job summary

Amentum Advanced Solutions (AS), a performance unit of Amentum Engineering & Technology, seeks a Power Systems Design Engineer to support projects ranging from small studies to turnkey power systems. You will design power distribution, prepare drawings, and ensure compliance with NEC/NESC/NFPA 70E in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements include a BS in Electrical Engineering (ABET), 5+ years in power distribution design, and proficiency with SKM/ETAP; travel to sites domestically and abroad

Qualifications

  • BS in Electrical Engineering from ABET-accredited program.
  • Minimum 5 years in power distribution design, implementation, or commissioning.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Experience with SKM, ETAP; SEL synchroWAVe, ArcPro a plus.
  • Interest and background in electrical safety, electrical power distribution systems, lighting protection, grounding, smart-grid systems, and SCADA.
  • Drive to lead teams and deliver power system projects.

Responsibilities

  • Develop drawings including one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, power system plans, lighting plans, and installation details.
  • Design power distribution systems with load flow, short circuit, arc flash analyses, and system safety.
  • Develop protection schemes with coordination studies and transfer schemes.
  • Perform load calculations for components, cables, and equipment spacing.
  • Specify major electrical system components (substations, switchgear, MCCs, transformers, drives).
  • Design lighting systems for test facilities and analyze illumination levels.
  • Develop interfaces to facility equipment using hardwired interfaces and industrial networks.
  • Apply NEC, NESC, NFPA 70E, and other codes to develop state-of-the-art solutions.
  • Support hardware assembly and fabrication during installation.
  • Perform power system startup, checkout, and commissioning domestically and abroad.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines to ensure project success.
  • Plan labor resources and schedule milestones to stay within scope and budget.
  • Develop proposals to capture future work with clients and new markets.

Overview

Amentum Advanced Solutions (AS) is a performance unit of Amentum Engineering & Technology. AS specializes in developing, designing, constructing, and operating unique and complex research & development, scientific, and test facilities including wind tunnels, rocket test stands, climatic chambers, jet engine test cells, acoustic chambers, altitude test facilities, captive trajectory systems, and nuclear facilities. Projects span the automotive, motorsports, defense, nuclear, and aerospace markets. Recent clients include Audi, Boeing, BMW, Volkswagen, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, Honda, General Motors, NASA, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Department of Energy, and others across North America, Europe, and Asia.

AS is seeking a Power Systems Design Engineer to support projects ranging from small studies to multi‑million dollar turnkey supply. The role requires a team-oriented, organized individual who can communicate effectively at all levels and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. The position offers an opportunity to work with a dedicated team of engineering and business professionals focused on client satisfaction and delivering projects within scope, budget, and schedule.

Responsibilities
  • Develop drawings including one-line diagrams, elementary wiring diagrams, power system plans, lighting plans, and installation details.
  • Design power distribution systems that include load flow analysis, short circuit analysis, arc flash analysis, system safety, human safety, and other advanced systems.
  • Develop power distribution protection schemes with coordination studies and transfer schemes.
  • Perform load calculations for sizing electrical components, cables, conduit, and equipment spacing.
  • Specify major electrical system components including substations, switchgear, distribution panels, MCCs, transformers, disconnects, and drives for low and medium voltage AC and DC systems.
  • Design lighting systems for test facilities including specification and analysis of illumination levels and lighting quality.
  • Develop interfaces to facility equipment using hardwired interfaces and industrial networks.
  • Apply NEC, NESC, NFPA 70E, and other applicable codes in developing state-of-the-art solutions for the client.
  • Provide quality system processes such as checking the work of others, following standard procedures, and ensuring compliance to codes and standards.
  • Support hardware assembly and fabrication during factory and onsite installation.
  • Perform power system startup, checkout, and commissioning domestically and abroad.
  • Communicate with clients and management regarding project status.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and departments to ensure success.
  • Estimate system design, material, installation, checkout, commissioning, and activation of projects.
  • Plan labor resources and schedule project milestones to ensure completion within technical scope, budget, and client schedule.
  • Develop proposals to capture future work with current clients and new markets.
  • Lead power system projects through all phases including design, fabrication, implementation, testing, and commissioning.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in power distribution system design, implementation, or commissioning.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Experience with software such as SKM, ETAP; SEL synchroWAVe, ArcPro a plus.
  • Interest and background in electrical safety, electrical power distribution systems (including switchgear, substations, MCCs, PLCs, drive systems, protective relays, cable and wireway), lightning protection, grounding, lighting design, smart-grid systems, micro-grid systems, SCADA, and challenging projects.
  • A drive to develop innovative approaches and participate on teams or alone to design, develop, and deliver power system projects.
  • Ability to lead single and multi-discipline engineering teams to generate future workloads, deliver on project promises, and mentor colleagues.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs (rare).
  • Proximity to electrical circuits up to 161 kV and 120 VAC in applicable contexts.
  • Special PPE may include eye protection, hearing protection, arc flash protection, and shock protection.
  • Office, lab environment, or indoors on a construction site (>90%); field work as needed.
  • Travel to customer sites for meetings, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
Compensation & Benefits

Compensation: $130,380 - $170,380. This range is a good-faith estimate of the role’s offered compensation at posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as responsibilities, education, experience, skills, internal equity, market data, and applicable laws.
