Job summary

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) seeks an Automation Engineer to lead power system automation projects, focusing on data collection from IEDs, logic controls, and data presentation for customers. You will plan, design, develop, test, and commission projects using real-time controllers and SCADA interfaces.

The role emphasizes technical leadership, collaboration with project managers, and hands-on configuration of SE L equipment and third-party solutions.

Qualifications

• Experience with industry standard communication protocols (IEC-61850, DNP, Modbus).
• Experience with server/client SCADA applications.
• Experience with design/development suite of HMI applications.
• Willing to travel at least 20% domestically and internationally.
• IEC-61131 programming, Python programming a plus.
• Experience with IT/OT Network design and Wireshark troubleshooting.
• Substation safety training preferred.

Responsibilities

• Technical leadership to assist project managers and customers in planning applications.
• Join customer meetings to provide equipment expertise and recommendations.
• Define and oversee multiple objectives with minimal guidance.
• Research SEL equipment and third-party solutions.
• Explore OT network architectures and data flow.
• Review and certify deliverables for quality before submittal.
• Create automation design specs, drawings and product configurations.
• Perform factory testing and field commissioning procedures.
• Lead project engineering team to define deliverables, schedule, and execution.
