A well-established Texas TSP is seeking a Senior Power Systems Engineer to join its Operations Engineering team, providing technical support for transmission and substation assets, synchronous condenser facilities, equipment reliability, outage coordination, and asset health across its ERCOT-region network.
This is a hands-on role where engineering meets the control room. You'll support system operators and ERCOT on operational issues, lead equipment failure investigations, and shape the reliability programs, operating procedures, and operational models that keep the network running. Unlike larger utilities, where operations and equipment engineering sit in separate teams, here you'll work across both, giving you real ownership and faster development.
What you’ll do
- Provide technical shift support to system operators and field staff (voltage analysis, relay operation review, alarm investigation) and assist during real-time events and emergencies
- Provide engineering support for synchronous condenser facilities, and develop equipment maintenance strategies, reliability programs, and asset health assessments
- Lead equipment failure investigations and root cause analyses, and support major equipment outages and restoration
- Model system outage requirements, update operational models, and develop standard operating procedures
- Act as the technical link between operations and engineering/planning, and represent the company in ERCOT working groups and market notice reviews
- Support commissioning and energization of new facilities, and review new project designs from an operational perspective
- Make quarterly field visits to the Big Spring, TX substation site
What you’ll bring
- Minimum 7 years' experience in transmission system operations, plus transmission or generation engineering experience
- High-voltage substation equipment experience, with strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills
- Familiarity with ERCOT nodal protocols and operating guides (SOTE and NOMCR experience preferred)
- Experience with power system modeling software such as PSS/E
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology (Mechanical also acceptable)
- Texas PE license preferred
- Experience with synchronous condensers or large rotating equipment, power transformers, circuit breakers, protection and control systems, or SCADA is a plus
- Strong organization, documentation, and communication skills
Why this role
- Direct ownership of the equipment reliability and operational engineering that keep Texas transmission running
- Regular engagement with ERCOT and neighboring utilities at a technical and stakeholder level
- Real work-life balance: core office hours just 9am-2pm on in-office days, standard 40-hour week
- Broad exposure across operations, equipment engineering, and asset health, not siloed into one narrow function
- Clear progression: grow the operations engineering team by training future staff, deepen stakeholder coordination, and help establish an internal operations engineering controls program
- Small, collaborative culture where your work has visible impact
- Competitive benefits including health and wellness coverage (with parental leave), employer-matched 401(k), and generous PTO including sabbatical, holidays, and floating holidays
