SALARY

$68.821

POSITION SUMMARY

Supervises, oversees, and reviews the activities of employees engaged in the maintenance, repair, installation, and operation of the Authority's traction power distribution systems. Provides engineering and technical assistance to CTA Engineering forces and outside consultants.

Qualifications
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervises, monitors, and reviews the activities of field personnel to ensure compliance with the Authority's standards, procedures, preventive maintenance schedules, applicable government regulations, and safe work methods.
  • Investigates electrical problems to determine causes of malfunctions and failures. Develops, engineers, and applies solutions to reduce or prevent future problems.
  • Reads, interprets, and modifies specifications, electrical schematics, and construction drawings to ensure compliance with the Authority's standards and methods.
  • Designs and modifies electrical circuits using engineering principles.
  • Receives and analyzes requests for traction power distribution, electrical equipment installations, and modifications. Prepares, reviews, analyzes, and estimates costs for requested work.
  • Develops, proposes, and implements maintenance procedures for traction and ancillary power equipment.
  • Coordinates training for Power Maintenance linemen and lineman helpers.
  • Directs department personnel and the Control Center during rail service emergencies.
  • Assists in budget development and adherence.
  • Trains, develops, monitors, and evaluates staff performance. Reviews and recommends personnel actions.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to this position are roles such as Third Rail Foreman, Cable Foreman, ROW Electrical Maintenance Foreman, Subway Electrical Maintenance Foremen, Substation Foremen, and Material & Assignment Dispatcher.

CHALLENGES
  • Responding to emergencies 24/7.
  • Maintaining a large rail system, much of which is aging.
  • Making quick decisions often without full research.
  • Scheduling maintenance on a 24/7 operational system.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience (~8 years).
  • Must pass drug and alcohol testing mandated by FTA.
  • Valid Illinois Driver's License required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Walking extended distances in all weather conditions.
  • Climbing ladders.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical and traction power systems.
  • Thorough understanding of CTA's rail system.
  • Clear communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Office environment with exposure to electrical hazards.
  • Walking on structures and subways.
  • 24-hour call availability.
  • Travel within and outside the Chicago area for inspections and meetings.

  • Computers, maintenance tools, electrical test equipment, manuals, and standards.
