Reporting Line

This position reports to the Research Department Manager.

Your Role and Responsibilities

In this role, you will contribute to ABB's success through technology, software, product, and system development. You will identify and implement innovative solutions to relevant problems, showcasing your expertise by providing ideas and working independently or as part of an R&D team. The work model is onsite in Raleigh, NC.

You will be mainly accountable for:

  1. Scouting new technologies, creating proposals, and securing buy-in from sponsors.
  2. Assessing new technologies for applications like power supplies, grid-connected converters, UPS, EV chargers, motor drives, and more.
  3. Developing technical requirements and designing new solutions.
  4. Designing electronic circuits and printed circuit boards.
  5. Developing firmware for power converters.
  6. Selecting components and engaging suppliers.
  7. Building and testing simulation models and hardware demonstrators.
  8. Building test assemblies, conducting experiments, and recording data.
  9. Analyzing test data and optimizing solutions.
  10. Preparing technical reports, presentations, and publications.
  11. Writing invention disclosures and supporting patent filings.
  12. Representing ABB at professional conferences and events.
  13. Contributing to strategic planning activities.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (Power Electronics) preferred; Master's with 2+ years' experience required.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical circuit assembly, soldering, and PCB rework.
  • Proficiency with oscilloscopes, meters, and lab equipment.
  • Experience coding firmware for DSPs, MCUs, FPGAs (C, C++, Verilog).
  • PCB design experience using Altium or Cadence.
  • Experience with power electronics integration, CAD, and thermal FEA software.
  • Experience in research proposal writing and securing funding.
  • Ability to learn quickly, work internationally, lead teams, and manage projects.
  • Effective communication, presentation skills, and networking abilities.
  • Willingness to travel up to 15%.
  • Must have valid work authorization for the US.
