Job summary

Northrop Grumman is seeking a Power Electronics Engineer (Level 3 or 4) for an on‑site role in Rolling Meadows, IL, within the Electrical Design & Technology group. You will design power supplies and power products for space applications, lead engineers, and collaborate across engineering teams to meet rugged requirements.

The role requires strong experience in power electronics, schematic capture, simulation tools, and hands‑on prototyping.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of professional experience OR Master’s with 3 years OR PhD with 1 year.
  • Power supply circuit design experience including schematic capture through test and integration.
  • Experience with Mentor Graphics/Expedition, Altium or similar tools; LTSpice or PSPICE/SIMULIS/SIMULINK for simulation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform power supply design including simulation, schematic creation, component selection and PCB layout.
  • Conduct technical trade studies and worst‑case analysis.
  • Provide manufacturing support for hardware builds and test procedures.
  • Develop Acceptance Test Procedures and first‑piece checkout/testing.
  • Lead a team of engineers through design, simulation and testing of power supplies.

Position

Power Electronics Engineer – Level 3 or Level 4 located in Rolling Meadows, IL. The position is 100% onsite and cannot accommodate telecommute work. You will be part of Northrop Grumman’s Electrical Design & Technology group, working with other engineers to develop state-of-the-art power supplies and power products for space applications. This team supports the Electronics and Payloads Engineering Business Unit.

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform power supply design, including simulation and analysis, schematic creation, component selection, and printed wiring board layout.
  • Perform technical trade studies.
  • Conduct worst-case analysis and component stress analysis.
  • Provide manufacturing support for hardware builds.
  • Develop Acceptance Test Procedures and perform first-piece hardware checkout/testing.
  • Work in a lab environment and support hardware production.
  • Lead a team of engineers through the design, simulation, and testing of power supplies.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications – Level 3
  • Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of professional experience – OR – Master’s degree with 3 years of professional experience – OR – PhD with 1 year of professional experience.
  • No clearance required to start.
  • Power supply circuit design experience, including schematic capture through test and integration.
  • Experience utilizing schematic capture tools such as Mentor Graphics/Expedition, Altium, or similar software.
  • Power electronic simulation experience, such as LTSpice/SPICE/PSPICE, Saber, SIMPLIS, Simulink, or similar circuit simulation software.
  • Hands‑on prototyping and debug experience testing complex power systems, including various switch‑mode power electronic topologies and linear regulators.
  • Ability to translate system performance and operational specifications into hardware requirements, design, and test specifications.
  • Proven skills in team leadership, mentoring, communication with all levels of an organization internally and externally, adaptability, creativity, collaboration, and independent problem solving.

  • Bachelor’s degree with 8 years of professional experience – OR – Master’s degree with 6 years of professional experience – OR – PhD with 4 years of professional experience.
  • No clearance required to start.
  • Power supply circuit design experience, including schematic capture through test and integration.
  • Experience utilizing schematic capture tools such as Mentor Graphics/Expedition, Altium, or similar software.
  • Power electronic simulation experience, such as LTSpice/SPICE/PSPICE, Saber, SIMPLIS, Simulink, or similar circuit simulation software.
  • Hands‑on prototyping and debug experience testing complex power systems, including various switch‑mode power electronic topologies and linear regulators.
  • Ability to translate system performance and operational specifications into hardware requirements, design, and test specifications.
  • Proven skills in team leadership, mentoring, communication with all levels of an organization internally and externally, adaptability, creativity, collaboration, and independent problem solving.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, focused on Power Conversion/Power Electronics, with a minimum of 8 years of power electronics design experience.
  • Proficiency in Worst-Case Circuit Analysis (WCCA) and power integrity analysis.
  • Working knowledge of designing high‑frequency magnetics including transformers, coupled inductors, EMI chokes, and common‑mode filters.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects with four or more team members.
  • Current TS/SCI security clearance.

Salary ranges for this role are $108,800.00 – $163,200.00 for Level 3 and $135,800.00 – $203,600.00 for Level 4.
