MissionHires is seeking a seasoned Power Electronics Engineer on behalf of a company developing advanced power conversion systems for renewable energy, grid infrastructure, and high-voltage applications. This engineer will lead the design, development, optimization, prototyping, and validation of multilevel converter technologies while partnering with cross-functional engineering teams to deliver reliable, compliant, high-performance solutions.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop high-power converter topologies, including multilevel circuits, and select appropriate switching devices such as IGBTs, SiC MOSFETs, and GaN transistors.
- Optimize converter designs for efficiency, harmonic performance, high-voltage operation, reliability, and scalability.
- Perform system simulation, modeling, and analysis using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, LTSpice, PLECS, or similar platforms.
- Lead hands-on prototyping, hardware assembly, breadboarding, integration, lab testing, and field validation activities.
- Troubleshoot new designs and production issues; perform root-cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
- Collaborate with controls, mechanical, and test engineering teams to address system integration, protection, cooling, thermal performance, and fault-management requirements.
- Evaluate EMI/EMC, power losses, thermal behavior, and component-level performance during design and validation.
- Ensure designs align with applicable IEEE, IEC, UL, safety, quality, and performance standards.
- Manage component obsolescence matters for existing hardware platforms.
- Prepare technical documentation, design reports, test results, and presentations for internal stakeholders and external partners.
- Support internal audits and maintain adherence to documented engineering policies and procedures.
- Mentor junior engineers, provide technical direction, and contribute to project planning, resource allocation, and milestone tracking.
- Monitor emerging power-electronics technologies, including wide-bandgap devices and advanced modulation methods, and apply relevant developments to product design.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related technical field.
- At least 7 years of professional power electronics design experience, with emphasis on multilevel converter topologies and high-voltage systems.
- Demonstrated experience designing multilevel converters, such as modular multilevel converters (MMC) or cascaded H-bridge (CHB) systems.
- Strong knowledge of power semiconductor devices, including silicon IGBTs and wide-bandgap technologies such as SiC or GaN.
- Proficiency with power electronics simulation and design tools, including MATLAB/Simulink and SPICE-based software.
- Hands-on experience with hardware prototyping, breadboarding, testing, debugging, and design validation.
- Proven ability to improve converter efficiency, reduce harmonics, and address high-voltage design challenges.
- Knowledge of EMI/EMC, thermal management, cooling approaches, power-loss calculations, and fault protection.
- Experience leading hardware integration and prototyping efforts from concept through validation.
- Strong problem-solving, technical documentation, written communication, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional engineering environment.
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with a power electronics or power systems specialization is preferred.
- 10 or more years of experience, including product-development leadership involving FACTS devices, HVDC, or renewable-energy integration systems, is preferred.
- Experience with advanced control strategies, including PWM techniques or model predictive control for multilevel converters, is preferred.
- Experience with embedded systems, FPGA/DSP programming, or real-time controls implementation is preferred.
- Familiarity with regulatory certification processes for high-power equipment is preferred.
- Experience with PCB layout tools such as Altium Designer and mechanical integration software is preferred.
- Patent filings or technical publications related to power electronics are preferred.
