Job summary

RCT Systems, Power Systems Division, is seeking a mid-level to senior Power Electronics / Electrical Engineer specializing in Power Electronics Hardware and Controller Design and Testing. You will design and test high-power converters using SiC or GaN devices, and develop CHIL/PHIL and real-time testing setups in a collaborative environment.

The ideal candidate will have experience with high-power (>5 kW) converter topologies, digital control, and be able to work with cross-functional teams

Qualifications

• BS in electrical engineering, computer science, or related major is required; graduate work acceptable in lieu of some work experience.
• Experience with high-power solid-state converters (>5 kW) and WBG devices preferred.
• Ability to obtain DoD security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Design and test WBG-based power electronic converter topologies including active rectifiers, isolated DC-DC converters, solid-state-transformers, and high-speed motor drives.
• Design and test power electronic converter digital control algorithms.
• Develop CHIL, PHIL, or real-time test setups.
• Design and test systems based on WBG semiconductor modules 1.2 kV to 10 kV.
• Lead cross-functional teams to develop solid-state power conversion systems.
• Provide technical input into business development activities.
• Create, review, and issue prototype and production level test procedures and test plans.
• Write and/or review EE focused patents, whitepapers, and technical conference/journal articles.

Responsibilities

RCT Systems, Power Systems Division, is seeking a mid-level to senior Power Electronics / Electrical Engineer specializing in Power Electronics Hardware and Controller Design and Testing. Responsibilities of a qualified candidate will include:

• Design and test WBG- (SiC or GaN) based power electronic converter topologies including active rectifiers, isolated DC-DC converters, solid-state-transformers, and high-speed motor drives
• Design and test power electronic converter digital control algorithms
• Develop Controller-Hardware-in-the-Loop (CHIL), Power-Hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL), or real-time (RT) test setups
• Design and test systems based on WBG semiconductor modules ranging from 1.2 kV to 10 kV
• Lead cross-functional teams to develop solid-state power conversion systems
• Provide technical input into business development activities
• Create, review, and issue prototype and production level test procedures and test plans
• Write and/or review EE focused patents, whitepapers, and technical conference/journal articles
• United States Citizenship is required due to US Government ITAR program restrictions. Must indicate citizenship status on individual documents submitted with the application (resume/CV or cover letter itself)– applications not identifying citizenship status on the submitted documents will *not* be considered. Note that even if you have an active security clearance, you must identify citizenship on your submitted application documents.
• BS in electrical engineering, computer science, or related major required; graduate work is acceptable in lieu of some work experience
• Some experience developing higher power (>5 kW) solid-state power conversion is a must-have: identifying, selecting, modeling, analyzing, and designing various AC and DC power conversion topologies, and key components thereof, or in controlling these topologies and components.
• Ability to obtain a DoD security clearance

Desired Skillset

• Wide bandgap semiconductor devices
• Medium voltage power distribution and solid-state-transformers (SST)
• Selection or design of magnetics for power electronics converters, particularly for higher voltage switching applications
• High speed communications development with high performance FPGAs
• Experience programming various microcontrollers, DSPs, and FPGAs
• Hands-on experience with PLECS RT Box, Typhoon HIL, OPAL-RT, or other Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) platforms
• Experience with Altium (preferred), Cadence, KiCAD, or other PCB design software
• Experience working with 3-phase power systems

Immediate Requirements/Projects Include

• High Power SiC and Silicon power device design into converters/inverters
• MIL standards compliance (e.g., 461, 1399, 704)
• Multiple parallel/series connected bi-directional AC-DC and DC-DC converters
• 13.8 kV and 4160V grid interface power converters
• Galvanically-isolated DC-DC converters
• Design of modular power converters ranging from 10kW to 500kW converters scalable to multiple MWs
• Controller-Hardware-in-the-Loop (CHIL) and Power-Hardware-in-the-Loop (PHIL) development of WBG-based converter applications.
