Job description

Our client designs and manufactures advanced performance, endurance, and production test systems for electrical powertrain components across the automotive, aerospace, marine, and railway industries. Their systems support testing of internal combustion, electric, and hybrid vehicle components, including starters, alternators, inverters/power electronics, e-motors, and e-axles. Their customer base spans OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, retail and aftermarket channels, military organizations, universities, and the remanufacturing industry, and the company is recognized as a global benchmark in starter and alternator testing while continuing to expand its e-mobility test offering.

The Opportunity

Our client is hiring a Power Electronics Designer to design analog and digital power electronic devices from concept through schematic capture and PCB layout, and on into manufacturing. This is a hands‑on hardware role supporting new product development and product qualification. The team is in a critical phase — a new product is nearing final qualification with a customer already waiting on it — so the right candidate will need to ramp quickly and step into active project work with minimal onboarding time. Onboarding support will be available from the engineering team.

What You'll Own
  • Design analog and digital power electronic devices from concept through schematic and PCB layout, and through to manufacturing.
  • Take hands‑on ownership of hardware development — design, build, and test — rather than handing designs off to others.
  • Support final‑stage qualification testing on a new product with an active, waiting customer.
  • Collaborate closely with software/controls engineers to ensure clean hardware-software integration.
  • Serve as a go‑to technical resource for power electronics within the team.
  • Take ownership of future or parallel projects as they arise.
What We're Looking For
  • Strong, hands‑on power electronics hardware experience — schematic capture, PCB layout, prototyping, bring‑up, and test.
  • Comfortable working across both analog and digital power electronics design.
  • High‑power experience strongly preferred, with a sweet spot around 1000V ± / 500A ±; 50kW+ background required, with 200–300kW range especially relevant. Candidates with 500–600V or 100–200kW experience are also viable.
  • Working knowledge of software/controls sufficient to collaborate effectively with software engineers — this is roughly an 80% hardware / 20% software role, not a software‑first position.
  • Background in automotive electrification or high‑power data center power electronics is a strong fit.
  • Ability to operate independently and contribute immediately, given the short ramp‑up window.
  • Curiosity, a self‑starter mindset, and willingness to take ownership of projects beyond the immediate assignment.
Nice to Have
  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, with coursework or focus in power electronics.
  • Experience with EV/hybrid propulsion power electronics — traction inverters, e-axles, e-motors, gate driver design, DC link sizing, or thermal/cooling design for power stages.
  • Patents or other technical IP in power electronics or adjacent fields.
  • Six Sigma or similar process/quality certification.
Location & Work Arrangement

This role is based in the Detroit / Auburn Hills area and is not remote, given the hardware nature of the work and the location of the program hardware. For candidates in the broader local region, the role could eventually move to a hybrid schedule of roughly three days per week in the office. Strong candidates from outside the immediate area may still be considered, potentially with relocation support.
