Job summary

Trane Technologies seeks a Power Electronics Applications Engineer to advance next-generation electrical systems for industrial chillers. You will lead design and analysis, translate requirements into hardware and control architectures, and collaborate with cross-functional teams.

This role emphasizes hands-on simulation, system modeling, and qualification testing, with opportunities to influence sustainability initiatives and the Gigaton Challenge.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or Engineering Physics.
  • Minimum 2 years of electrical engineering work experience.
  • Experience with electric systems simulation software (MATLAB/SimScape, PSIM, PLECS).
  • Strong embedded control systems experience and the ability to integrate modules.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; able to present to diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

  • Lead projects as a self-guided owner and drive milestones.
  • Develop project plans, prioritize tasks, and identify quality improvements.
  • Collaborate on customer issues to keep technology at the forefront.
  • Design power electronics topologies: DC-DC, AC-DC-AC converters.
  • Translate duty cycles into requirements and model thermal management and EMC/EMI.
  • Model and analyze electromechanical systems and control systems.
  • Lead qualification testing and analyze data for design reliability.
  • Coordinate with Supply Chain for onboarding and part releases.
  • Collaborate across teams to adopt new technologies.

As a Power Electronics Applications Engineer, you will be at the forefront of designing next-generation electrical systems for Trane Technologies’ premier climate control products, with a heavy emphasis on our industry-leading industrial chillers. This role is housed within the Electric Systems and Components (ESC) group—a key branch of our global Advanced Concepts and Capabilities team in Corporate Engineering. Our mission is to identify, develop, and deploy leading-edge technologies that directly enable sustainable product growth and establish our businesses at the absolute cutting edge of the industry. What Will You Do?
  • Project Leadership & Execution: Act as a self-guided owner of your projects.
  • Develop project plans, prioritize tasks, achieve scheduled milestones, and proactively identify quality and productivity improvement opportunities.
  • Participate on teams to work through customer issues to make choices to keep Trane Technologies at the forefront of technology.
  • Filing to patents on intellectual property to novel solutions as you translate end-product solutions into system and power electronic module requirements.
  • Electric Systems Design, Simulation and Concepting: Use your expertise in multiple power electronic topologies to develop DC-DC converters, AC-DC-AC power conversion units, and other advanced devices.
  • Translate end-product duty cycles into detailed requirements and model thermal management, EMC/EMI compliance, and motor control algorithms.
  • System Modeling & Analysis: Conduct in-depth analysis and model-based simulations of electromechanical rotational machines, power electronics, and control systems using tools such as Matlab/Simulink/SimScape, PSIM, and PLECS.
  • Product & Laboratory Qualification: Develop laboratory test plans, select and define strategic testing equipment, and lead qualification testing.
  • Analyze test data and prepare comprehensive technical reports to ensure design reliability, durability, and safety.
  • Supplier & Supply Chain Integration: Partner with Supply Chain and Procurement teams to support supplier onboarding and part-release workflows (including engineering drawings, BOMs, and technical specifications).
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Network across the enterprise to identify opportunities to integrate new technologies.
  • Partner with product teams, customers, and suppliers to resolve technical issues and keep Trane Technologies at the cutting edge.
What You Will Bring:
  • Education & Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or Engineering Physics.
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant electrical engineering work experience.
  • Key Competencies: Domain Interest: A strong interest in HVAC applications, operating conditions for industrial refrigeration equipment, and the application of battery energy storage systems.
  • Analytical & Simulation Expertise: Experience with electric systems simulation software (MATLAB SimScape, PLECs) and ability to present data showing why a particular architecture is preferred over another.
  • Systems & Controls Integration: Strong understanding of embedded control systems with the ability to specify and integrate different modules into a functioning system. Experience with system communications, message databases, and analysis tools is preferred.
  • Custom engineering development scripts to run design verification tests.
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. You must be adept at translating complex technical information and presenting it clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Project Management & Initiative: Self-motivated and capable of managing small‑scale projects, establishing clear priorities, tracking risks/obstacles, and executing to tight deadlines.
  • Software Proficiency: Competency in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Project, and PowerPoint) to track project milestones and draft engineering documentation.
