Job Summary

The Power Distribution Electrician performs service calls and work orders submitted by students, faculty, staff, and departments within the university to include maintaining records, and performs preventative maintenance work up to and including 13,800-volts. Trains lesser skilled personnel.

Core Responsibilities

• Runs conduit, pulls wire, and installs and repairs electrical circuits. Performs electrical work related to air conditioning and refrigeration.
• Tests continuity of circuit to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components using testing instruments such as meg ohmmeter; troubleshoots and diagnoses electric systems to detect and repair function.
• Observes functioning of installed equipment or systems to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
• Assists and consults with outside contractors on electrical specifications and guidance concerning the remodeling, repair, and building of new structures.
• Works from ladders, scaffolding, and rooftops of buildings.
• Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
• Plans new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring, consistent with specifications and local electrical codes.
• Prepares sketches showing location of wiring and equipment, or follows diagrams or blueprints, ensuring that concealed wiring is installed before complete of future walls, ceilings, and flooring. Prepares labor and material estimates for new electric projects.
• Installs, maintains, repairs, and modifies electrical systems including 13,800-volt primary to 480/277-volt transformers, 480-volts to 208/120-volt transformers.
• Installs control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, and circuit-breaker panels from 24-volts up to and including 13,800-volts, and trains lesser skilled personnel on these higher voltage systems.
• Keeps current of changes in operational procedures, new equipment, and other related equipment; works in conjunction with other trades, staff personnel in support of daily job tasks; and informs appropriate personnel of unusual conditions, problems, or deficiencies and takes appropriate actions.
• Troubleshoots electrical system problems following detailed operational and maintenance procedures; performs installation and maintenance of existing electrical systems, new constructions, and special events.
• Maintains knowledge of the current National Electrical Code and its application.
• Assists in design and construction of electrical systems.
• Leads, performs with, and gives direction to skilled or unskilled workers and maintenance workers; supervises and coordinates activities in conjunction with an in the absence of the immediate supervisor and manages projects and workload assignments as required.
• Installs, maintains, operates, repairs, and modifies electrical system including, but not limited to, electrical motors, variable frequency drives, electrical control systems, generators, transformers, and laboratory equipment.
• Performs preventative or corrective maintenance and detailed inspection of electrical, mechanical, and related systems.
• Operates, performs preventative maintenance, and otherwise maintains 15kV switchgear and distribution, including central substation and primary distribution loops.
• Generates reports and assists in preparing estimates and special projects.
• Promotes safety and environmental protection by immediately reporting unsafe situations, spills, and accidents; following University safety plans/procedures/protocols; and participating in appropriate safety training.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Current Master Electrician License from state of Texas.
• Valid Texas Driver’s License.
• High School Diploma, Vocational training or Apprenticeships in a related field.
• Seven (7) years of journeyman level commercial/industrial electrical experience including a minimum of two years journeyman or master level experience in either terminating, troubleshooting, repairing, or operating 13,800-volt distribution systems.
• One (1) year supervisory role.
• This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.

• Advanced knowledge of National Electric Code, state and local building codes.
• Operating knowledge of power tools and trade hand tools.
• Operating knowledge of electrical meter and locaters, diagnostic equipment to repair, install, replace, and test electrical circuits, equipment, and appliances.

Working Conditions

• Variable environments including indoor and outdoor locations.
• Exposure to variable Texas weather condition and/or physical hazards such as working in elevated and confined space; working in attic, sub-floors, machines rooms, on roof, and other operational areas.

• Exposure to potential occupational hazards including toxic, biological, and chemical hazards within certain laboratory spaces.
• Exposure to variety of construction and physical plant hazards including medium voltages (15KV), confined space, elevated heights, dust & dampness, high noise levels, outside weather and energized equipment & systems.

• Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment when needed, to include: steel toe or non-slip shoes, eye protection, hardhat, back belt, body harness, biological protective gear, ear muffs or plugs, respirator, and arc flash protection.

• Required to be on stand-by call status, carrying pager, cell phone or two-way radio as assigned and respond to afterhours emergency calls.
• Required to be on stand-by call status for overtime, evenings, after hours, odd hours, shift work, weekends, and/or holidays as needed. Flexibility in scheduling may be required.
