Job description

Position Overview

The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at North Carolina State University invites applications for a full‑time postdoctoral research associate to work with Dr. Joe Sagues in the area of biocarbon energy storage. The position has an initial one‑year appointment with the potential for extension based on performance and funding availability.

The successful candidate will conduct and publish peer‑reviewed research on sustainable energy storage materials, with a particular emphasis on the synthesis and application of biomass‑derived systems. The work will focus on the design and implementation of biocarbon electrodes, advancing the use of renewable resources in scalable and effective energy storage solutions while collaborating with faculty, research staff, and students to drive innovation in this emerging field.

Responsibilities

Conduct independent research, design experiments, and analyze data related to biocarbon energy storage.

Publish high‑quality papers in peer‑reviewed journals and present findings at scholarly conferences.

Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of engineers, biologists, and chemists from academia, industry, and national laboratories.

Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, with early mornings, evenings, and weekends as research needs require.

Qualifications
  • PhD in chemical engineering, biological engineering, agricultural engineering, environmental engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Research experience focused on biocarbon material processing with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Expertise in biocarbon material synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid NC driver’s license.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary collaboration in academia, industry, or national laboratories.
