Postdoctoral Research Associate positions at Oregon State University

The College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon, invites applications for two Institutional Postdoctoral Research Associate positions in any area of Earth System Sciences, including climate, ocean, and atmospheric sciences and geophysics.

COAS is a leading graduate research institution in oceanographic, atmospheric and earth sciences, with faculty and staff, graduate students, and strong computing and analytical facilities.

Overview

Appointment: Awards are competitive, with emphasis on potential for independent, creative research. The positions are for three years, with 1.0, 0.75, and 0.5 FTE in years 1, 2, and 3 respectively, guaranteed by the University. FTE may be increased to 1.0 in years 2 and 3 with external support generated by the candidate in collaboration with their faculty mentors. Successful candidates will be paired with suitable faculty mentors for training in proposal development, research collaboration, and publication of results. Institutional postdocs are encouraged to seek external funding and may serve as Principal Investigator or co-Principal Investigator on grant proposals. Following training, there may be an opportunity to transition to a research or tenure-track status based on mutual agreement and university procedures.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Perform basic research in themes including Climate Systems, Biogeochemical Systems, Earth Dynamics, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Geophysics, and Earth System Management as part of the college's strategic priority in Advancing the Science of Sustainable Earth Ecosystems.
• Develop a research program that contributes to the field and to external funding; publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences.
• Engage in research activities such as study design, data collection and analysis, modeling, and statistical interpretation; collaborate as an independent investigator and with other PIs.
• Provide service to the College, University and profession; may include teaching activities such as guest lecturing, course development, and advising students informally.
• Assist with grant preparation and submission to agencies and foundations; prepare peer-reviewed articles and conference presentations.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Earth System Sciences or a related field completed prior to the appointment.
• Excellent command of English, strong quantitative and analytical skills, and strong written and verbal communication abilities.
