Job Description

The Department of Entomology at Virginia Tech is accepting applications for the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate. Research will focus on ecological and biogeochemical effects of introducing native unionid mussels into two restored urban headwater streams in Reston, Virginia - Snakeden Branch and The Glade. The incumbent will work with a team of experts on key components of this research, including understanding the outcomes of mussel restoration regarding ecological processes, water quality, and biological communities. The primary responsibilities include:

  1. Coordinating research efforts across team members;
  2. Measuring and analyzing features of individual mussels, mussel beds, and stream reaches to describe mussels' role in stream ecosystem function;
  3. Modeling mussel functions across varying densities and spatial and temporal scales.

This role requires frequent trips to Reston, VA, including overnight stays.

Required Qualifications
  • PhD in biology, ecology, ecohydrology, biogeochemistry, zoology, or related discipline, with emphasis on aquatic ecosystems, earned no more than four years prior to the appointment date, with at least one year of eligibility remaining;
  • Demonstrated scientific productivity, including peer-reviewed publications;
  • Strong statistical modeling and analytical skills;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency with biogeochemical modeling;
  • Knowledge of geographic information systems;
  • Experience mentoring students;
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills.
