Job description

General Description

This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.

Research Title

Postdoctoral Researcher

The work will entail

Researcher will develop a thermometer based on atomic fluorescence intensity ratios. This research project will explore several novel and high‑risk techniques for realizing a primary temperature sensor in a compact package. This will require operating and locking multiple lasers to atomic transitions, fiber‑optic design and operation, multilevel rate‑equation simulations, and careful characterization of systematic effects.

Key responsibilities
  • Perform experimental tasks toward realizing a primary thermometer based on rubidium atoms
  • Data analysis
  • Disseminate project results via peer‑reviewed publications and public presentations
Qualifications
  • PhD in Physics or a related field
  • Experience required in two or more of the following areas:
    • Frequency stabilization of laser systems
    • Python programming
    • Temperature metrology
    • Modeling population dynamics with a set of coupled rate equations

U.S. Citizen Preferred
