Job description

Postdoctoral Associate - EEB - Angrawal Lab

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world‑renowned research, education, and outreach. Our focus is on understanding complex systems, ensuring nutrition and a healthy environment for all, and supporting local communities worldwide.

Position Function

This grant‑supported Postdoctoral Associate will conduct comparative and experimental studies on transcriptomic responses to insect diet and toxins, using the milkweed‑insect community as a model for molecular evolution. Methods will include RNA‑seq, bioinformatics, CRISPR and transgenic approaches to identify genes and regulatory sequences that drive plant toxin detoxification, transport, and resistance.

Anticipated Division of Time
  • Research (55%): Lead experimental, computational, and comparative work to understand how changes in gene expression underlie insect diet specialization and sequestration. Requires experience in both computational and bench approaches, including bioinformatics and RNA‑seq.
  • Writing and Publications (30%): Produce manuscripts for scientific journals and present at professional conferences.
  • Mentoring (10%): Train graduate and undergraduate students in laboratory protocols and computational methods.
  • Personal and Professional Development (5%): Attend educational seminars and training workshops, lead lab meetings and activities, maintain required educational and position qualifications.

This position is a one‑year appointment, renewable contingent on funding, available work, and successful performance.

Requirements
  • PhD or equivalent in the biological sciences.
  • Experience with molecular genetic techniques, high‑throughput sequencing, and data analysis.
  • Strong research background in comparative evolutionary questions, insect herbivores, and natural history.
Supervision Exercised

May supervise undergraduate researchers.
