Job summary

Idaho National Laboratory (INL) seeks a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate with a materials science and engineering background to join the Materials Performance team in the Materials and Manufacturing Department in the Energy, Environment Science & Technology Directorate. This role operates on a 9x80 schedule at the Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off.

The position emphasizes integrating modeling with experimental work, advanced characterization, and collaboration

Qualifications

• PhD in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
• PhD completion by appointment or within 5 years of graduation.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance (US citizenship).
• Hands-on experimental research experience.
• Proficiency in advanced data computation and analytical software.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.
• Strong problem-solving skills and meticulous attention to detail.
• Familiarity with advanced characterization tools.
• Demonstrated publications in high-impact journals.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research and development in materials and manufacturing.
• Provide project management support for compressed timelines.
• Characterize data using SEM, TEM, XRD, and mechanical testing.
• Analyze experimental data and develop sintering mechanism models.
• Collaborate with INL researchers and external partners on field assisted sintering.
• Prepare and publish findings in peer‑reviewed journals and present at conferences.
• Contribute to research proposals and project reports.
