Job summary

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to advance methods for quantifying shear strength in monolithic ceramics as a function of temperature. You will refine testing techniques and develop FE/numerical models, aiming to reconcile diverse responses through research results and publications.

You will work within the Ceramics and Ceramics Composites (CCC) Group in MSTD, pursuing rigorous, impactful science while complying with safety and ethics and supporting

Qualifications

• PhD completed within the last 5 years in a relevant field.
• Experience with ceramics, brittle materials, and microstructural analysis.
• Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q-Clearance.

Responsibilities

• Hot hardness testing and postmortem analyses.
• Spherical indentation and postmortem work.
• Estimate particle size related to brittle-to-ductile transition.
• Develop concepts and tests to estimate shear strength.
• Build models to correlate experiments and simulations.
• Present and publish research results in peer-reviewed journals.
• Ensure compliance with safety, health, and quality programs.
• Uphold ORNL values and ethics in daily work.
• Contribute to ORNL’s mission through collaborative teamwork.
