Job summary

Sandia National Laboratories seeks a highly motivated Postdoctoral Appointee to join our Materials and Failure Modeling Department for computational solid mechanics research with scientific ML. The role focuses on material modeling, optimization, and integrating LLM-driven pipelines, with opportunities to publish and present at conferences.

Onsite work is required; a PhD and a strong publication record are essential for consideration.

Qualifications

• PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field
• Solid foundations in strength of materials, continuum mechanics, and/or mechanics of materials
• Experience with programming languages C, C++, Julia, MATLAB, Python, and/or Rust
• Research in scientific machine learning and architectures such as physics-informed neural networks, graph neural networks, and operator learning
• Strong publication record and conference presentations
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Responsibilities

• Apply solid mechanics and advanced mathematics to support the research
• Utilize optimization methods such as genetic algorithms for discovering new material laws
• Use state-of-the-art finite element codes and computational resources to support the work
• Build and test agentic material modeling pipelines via pretrained large language models (LLMs)
• Develop a robust research portfolio through peer‑reviewed journal publications and conference presentations
