Job summary

Sandia National Laboratories is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Appointee to join the Materials and Failure Modeling Department and contribute to computational solid mechanics research, development, and analysis in scientific machine learning.

You will apply solid mechanics, advanced math, and cutting-edge optimization to advance material models, using state-of-the-art FE codes and HPC resources. The role emphasizes publishing and professional engagement.

Qualifications

• PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, or related field.
• Strong foundations in solid mechanics: strength of materials, continuum mechanics.
• Experience with programming in C/C++, Python, MATLAB, Julia, or Rust.
• Experience with scientific machine learning and architectures (PINNs, GNNs, operator learning).
• Publication history and ability to obtain/maintain a DOE Q clearance.

Responsibilities

• Apply solid mechanics and advanced mathematics to support ongoing research.
• Utilize optimization methods, e.g., genetic algorithms, to discover material laws.
• Use finite element codes and HPC resources to support the team’s work.
• Build and test agentic material modeling pipelines via pretrained LLMs.
• Publish results and present at conferences and professional societies.
