Job summary

Qualifications

  • Current certification and registration in ARRT Radiologic Technologist – R.T.(R).
  • Eligible to participate in a post-primary CT training pathway for CT registry.

Responsibilities

  • Train in and perform CT examinations under the supervision of a licensed CT technologist.
  • Progress toward ARRT CT registry eligibility and independent practice.
  • Assist with patient care, transport, and workflow improvement in the CT suite.
  • Maintain equipment readiness and adhere to radiation safety and HIPAA policies.

Post Primary Clinical Apprentice - Computed Tomography (CT)

Duke University Health System is seeking an experienced or new graduate Imaging Technologist to join one of the most comprehensive and advanced CT programs in the region while embracing our mission of Advancing Health Together.

At Duke University Hospital, you'll have the opportunity to work alongside a collaborative team of more than 60 full-time CT Technologists supporting a wide range of specialized services, including Trauma, Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, Cardiac, Oncology, Transplant, Interventional Radiology, Surgical Services, and Urgent Outpatient Care.

Our CT department operates 20 state-of-the-art scanners across the health system, including 14 fixed clinical scanners, 5 intraoperative scanners, and 1 portable scanner dedicated to the Neuro ICU. What you will do:

  • Train in and perform CT examinations under the direct supervision of a licensed CT technologist.
  • Progressively demonstrate required clinical competencies, protocols, and workflows necessary to qualify to sit for the ARRT CT registry.
  • Perform imaging tasks only within approved scope and competency level until independent competencies are achieved.
  • Support efficient use of CT resources while learning prioritization of inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and procedural imaging.
  • Assist with patient transport, room turnover, contrast and supply preparation, and coordination activities that support exam cycle time and access goals.
  • Apply workflow efficiencies learned during training to support consistent throughput under supervision.
  • Provide professional, compassionate patient interactions, including explanation of exam steps, reassurance, and support throughout the imaging encounter.
  • Collaborate with staff to ensure patient comfort, safety, and clear communication.
  • Assist with stocking, equipment readiness checks (non‑clinical), and maintaining organized, clean exam areas between patients.
  • Work collaboratively with CT technologists, nursing, front‑desk staff, and transport teams to support coordinated patient care.
  • Adhere to radiation safety, infection prevention, HIPAA, and departmental policies.
  • Actively engage in feedback, evaluations, and competency documentation required for progression toward independent practice.

Required Qualifications:

Education:

Graduation from an ARRT‑approved radiologic technology or nuclear medicine technology educational program is required.

Candidates must hold current certification and registration in one of the following:

  • ARRT Registered Radiologic Technologist – R.T.(R)

Candidates must be eligible to participate in a post‑primary CT training pathway leading to completion of required competencies and eligibility to sit for the ARRT CT registry.

Experience:

Completion of clinical rotations in an imaging department as part of an accredited radiologic technology or nuclear medicine technology educational program, including exposure to patient care and imaging department workflows.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

  • ARRT Registered Radiologic Technologist – R.T.(R)
